missing airconditioner belt tensioner

Hello,  I recently purchased a 1992 U225 with the B5.9 Cummins diesel engine.  Apparently years ago the air conditioner fan belt had broken as a result of a faulty belt tension-er.  The tension-er has been removed, and I am left with only the A/C compressor.  I am having a problem finding an engine breakdown so that I can find the replacement part to get my A/C back up and running.  If anyone has a breakdown of the engine to see where this component was mounted at, or if anyone might know the part # of what I need, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Jason.

Jason,

Call Parts at Foretravel-- they fit the compressor and likely the tensioner.  800 955-6226.

My U300 does not have a tensioner, just runs a couple of belts over to the compressor but yours may.

Heavy duty tensioner should run no more than about $90. Nice if someone would shoot you a foto of the installation. Yes, Foretravel will have the tensioner part number, belt number and good advise or other members with the 5.9 probably have done it a few times. Here is the Gates site from one of my bookmarks:http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=4956&location_id=544  Gates makes good products and can supply both tensioners and belts.

Make sure to use an angle reading tool (forgot the name, too early in the morning) available most hardware stores ($5-$15) to check all three angles, crank pulley, tensioner roller and compressor pulley to make sure all three angles are the same. Could have been part of the original problem.

I just replaced mine on a 97 cummins 8.3l and the Cummins box part number listed is #3934818.

Hope that is the same as yours.

Thank you for your responses.  I will try and contact Foretravel parts department tomorrow.  I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but the last time I had tried to contact the parts department they told me that they do not have the service manuals for anything older then 1994.  Where do the ones who own the older coaches (such as myself) go to get information, and service?  ???

Jason,

If you spent $340K for a Beech Bonanza back in '93, you would get a VERY complete operation manual, a parts manual with exploded views of EACH part with part numbers and whenever there was a revision, you would have it in the mail.

But,..... you don't have one so ask questions on the forum, use the search engine up top on the right side to look up previous posts and go to the excellent member made Foretravel tech site at: http://www.beamalarm.com/foretravel-links/foretravel-technical-help.htm

If they can look up the correct part for a 1994 U225, I would then transfer to James Triana and ask if there would be any difference between the tensioner/idler on the 1992 and 1994 Cummins B engine.

Get that part and verify that the pulley lines up and groove is correct for the proper belt.

Our Cummins C8.3 does not use an idler for the air conditioner compressor. It has its own narrow belt and we adjust belt tension by pivoting the compressor.
