Ridng an Earthquake in a Foretravel

At 1:51 PM this afternoon we experienced a 5.9 earthquake while in our GV 300.

We are located about 15-20 miles from the currently reported epicenter. reports say additional, lesser magnitude, after shocks should be expected.

The general feeling was a severe wind- like sensation or maybe a rough section of Interstate. The wife was standing at the sink and asked why the floor was rolling. Sitting in the chair by the door, I told her I thought it was an earthquake.

Within minutes the media, both radio & internet, were reporting the quake.

We felt secure in the FT, more so than if in our house 50 feet away. In our house things fell from tables, pictures displaced but, nothing damaged as well as I can tell at this time.

It was strange to see the 3 1/2 foot diameter oak, just 10 ft. away, start swaying.

Dave M lives nearby so, he'll probably chime in.

All's well in Powhatan.

John, Yes, I missed the main event, but when I got home, the DW was shaken, said all sorts of things, then I felt one of the after shocks, then another etc, about 5 over about 20 minutes. Went out to check our brick rancher, the guy who built it was brick nuts, 10' long and 36'wide, double brick walls in garage, sun room and entrqnce to basement.  All checked out well including the double chimney all looks great so far.
Outside cats look like they had an experience, no happy looking, not friendly etc. think they got spooked.  :D

wow, I know I was in the office for my first partial day back after surgery. I was sitting at my desk adn a rumbling started. I thought the office below was rocking out or something then the desk started moving and the guy sitting across from me started shaking and I was shaking and the ground was roaring and it lasted about a min. It was really odd and it was really loud and it surprised me it was so loud.

John,  This AM about 0130, had another large aftershock, could hear it coming, it shook the house and the DW went into that 200db scream mode.  Took awhile to get her calmed down to near normal. WOW!
We are 13 bird miles from Mineral, home of the last big one.
Hope these after shocks soon stop or I will be in bad shape with no sleep... :o

Dave, you might try moving to the Foretravel IF it's outside and away from large trees. Since we decided the FT was the best place to be we've experience little. Our FT uses the airbags for leveling & we haven't felt the quakes since the initial, "big one".

There have been 2 additional quakes ID'ed, a 4.2 & the 4.5 that you refer to & ,as said, we felt neither in the FT.

Now, you & I have to prepare for a possible visit by "Irene", this weekend.

John, the other night when the 4.2 hit, I was in the FT in the garage, heard it coming over the TV horse opras, and did feel it clearly, this AM at 0108 the 4.5 is the one that put the DW into the 200-300 db screaming mode, killed the rest of the night for sleep.
Being the 13 miles from Mineral and never hearing the sound it makes before, makes for an interesting experience.  Sorta like the diesel train coming and loud.
