Foretravel speedometers

Some of the FORETRAVEL units that I am looking at have had their speedometers replaced which leads to a suspicion of the actual mileages on these units.
It seems that they let go at about 35 - 40 thousand miles≥

Was there a run of bad head units, cables or speedometer drives on the transmissions ?

It may have been bad head units.

The speedometer was replaced by the previous/original owner on our 1997 U295. I think it was replaced around 55K miles. The current unit shows about 25K.

You should be able to get a good idea of engine time from the accumulated time on the tachometer. There is a pretty good correspondence between tach time and miles on the coach. I can't give you a multiplying factor, but some of the drive train experts could probably help with that.

That is a great reason the have and use the VMSpc if you have an electronic engine, my speedo shows very nearly the same as the computer shows, same with the engine hour reading.
My speedo works but after using the VMSpc, I prefer it to the actual speedo, for easy reading and correct mph read out as it agrees with the GPS exactly for distance and speed.
I sure prefer the ISM to a mechanical engine even though I do not know much about it except it sure does nice, so I like it.

My last 93 GV and now this U295 have both had the gauge replaced but the correct mileage was kept and a little plate glued to the wall next to switches mentioning it.
I just did a quick calc' on  Tim's, Pierces and Bob's miles divided by hrs and its funny how the figures come out.  45mph, 38mph and 40mph. So is there a lot of idling, stopping or is everyone driving slowly?? I would have thought that the figures would have been more to the 50-55mph or are the gauges not reading right ( or is my calc wrong)
I should go and check mine for fun.

Don,

When dealing with honest and reputable dealers, you have nothing to fear.  It is a crime to tamper with odometers and falsify mileage.  Our 2000 U320 is on its second odometer and when we bought it from Motorhomes of Texas there was paperwork that validated the odometer change.

John,

When we bought ours, it was a fast trip across the US. Now, while we have made trips to Southern California, Yellowstone, etc., a lot of the trips to campgrounds are on twisty roads. Toad or no toad has a lot to do with it. Heading to San Francisco or Reno, we leave the RAV at home and use it like a car. The 60-65 mph trip down turns into a lot of stop and go in the city. While it was a pretty quick trip to Yellowstone, driving from campground to campground was really slow so the 38 mph average was about what I would have guessed. The last owner took longer trips compared to our short jaunts so our average is probably closer to 30 mph.

Wonder if it is possible to retrieve transmission shift data to see how many times the Allison has changed gears in it's life?

I have replaced one speedometer on my 2000 but Dave is right about silverleaf. You get the correct info from the computer. I don't worry about the fact at hey are changed out.  Most units have so few miles that the low milage is an issue not high.

The engine computer keeps track of miles ( among lots of other stuff) VMSpc/other devices will read it.
