Tire prices

As I sit here in the SLC area reading about Gerard's ordeal, I decided I need to replace my tires.  I was quoted $3916 from Les Schwab for six XZA3+ tires, inclusive of mounting and tax.  Fair deal?  They said they would purchase my old ones for between $40 and $140 per tire, depending on condition.

Do you know what size & load range they quoted? Most of us should have Load Range H for new tires for a safety margin. Sometimes Foretravel originally used G to save money.
We paid about $600 each for 275/80R22.5 Load-range H XZA+ including spin-balancing each tire. And my purchase was before learning that FMCA discount maybe could have saved us $.

Did you see the Aug 29 2011 posting about getting a big discount using FMCA-Michelin Fleet Program?

Load range H for the front of Unicoaches is essential, due to the front mounted gennie. LR G is fine for the duals, at least on 95-99 models. Since we don't rotate, next year I will put a pair of H in front and move the old ones to the inner duals (I have one 'oldest' tire there along with a replacement). Then the following year I will replace all 4 in back.
LR G is fine for Unihomes.

Per my reading on the Michlien web site,  the XZA3+ tires are particularly designed as steering tires and are directional (ie. should always rotate in the same direction) whereas the XZA2s have a little different characteristics and are not that particular as far as rotational direction. I have seen the 3s with an arrow molded on the side

I see three scenarios for my replacements next spring:
1) All XZA3s
2) All XZA2s
3) Steering wheels XZA3s, driving wheels XZA2s

Comments?  (I'm probably thinking too much).

Check to see if the size you need is in both the 3/3+ and the 2.

Our coach has 275/80R22.5 LRH's on it, original tires were XZA2 Energy.  In 2007 we had XZA3s installed.  Only see that size/load range in the 3+'s now.

Michelle

ETA - I preferred the "road feel" of the XZA2 Energy we originally had on the coach over the XZA3 we have now.  We'll see what tires/sizes are available when it's time for a new set.  I'd do the 2s again if they're available in our size.

Aspenpilot, I have been running Continental LRH HSL's for about two years now, no problems at all.  Sidewalls are kind of stiff but with the FT's air suspension system I do not notice any difference in ride at all.

DOes anyone know if all Michelin dealers participate in the FMCA deal?  It appears the one in Nacogdoches never heard of it.

Gerard,

Here is the cut and paste off FMCA's website (Brett - if this violates FMCA copyright, let me know and I'll delete it) No problem, Brett

Michelle

(Edited to add - you might also see how the dealer's price compares to the program pricing Barry and Cindy already posted - tire prices  perhaps they will match or do better directly.

Tire Connection - Michelin Advantage Program

FMCA has signed up for Michelin's Advantage Program. This program is intended to provide competitive prices on Michelin RV tires at all authorized Michelin RV tire dealers. It does not guarantee the lowest price, as local dealers may be able to provide local customers with better prices.

In today's environment, raw material costs have driven tire prices up recently, and some dealers may have tire inventory purchased before some of these increases, which may allow them to provide even more competitive prices than the Advantage Program provides.

The FMCA Michelin Advantage Program will, however, allow members to buy new tires at the program price at any authorized Michelin RV Tire Dealer across the United States, ensuring that they won't pay higher base prices. This could come in especially handy when a tire emergency occurs while you are traveling.

Motorhome owners Visit Welcome to Michelin North America RV Website to locate an authorized Michelin RV tire dealer, to research tires, and to select the right tires for their motorhome. The tires listed on that site are included in the program.

FMCA members will always need to follow the instructions (See below cut and paste) provided by FMCA in order for dealers to recognize them as Advantage Program members, including providing the FMCA Advantage Program membership Ship-To number.

Any fees for mounting, balancing, state and local taxes, and tire disposal are extra and quoted locally by the servicing dealer, so those fees are not included in the program.

The tire purchase must be paid for with a credit card at the servicing dealership. Michelin's corporate office will charge the credit card the discounted price. FMCA will then send the member — via e-mail — a copy of the invoice that reflects the total with the Advantage Program discount.

Currently, the FMCA Michelin Advantage Program is available at Michelin dealers within the United States. FMCA is hopeful that a similar program can be arranged with Michelin dealers in Canada.

Tires for passenger cars and SUVs are not included in the program.

This Michelin Advantage Program was originally designed to support trucking customers. The FMCA program is the first opportunity for RV owners to access the benefits. Because FMCA was added to the program very recently, it may take some time for all of the Michelin dealers to be aware of it. Michelin is working to ensure that its dealers and customer care representatives are aware that FMCA is a new member of the program.

For  Michelin RV tire questions, visit Welcome to Michelin North America RV Website or call Michelin Customer Care at (800) 847-3435.

The Instructions:

Michelin Advantage program - how to use
Follow these instructions to locate a Michelin RV tire dealer and claim your exclusive FMCA-member tire discount on Michelin RV tires.
Get Started
1. Determine the RV tire size and tread design that you require. Currently, passenger car tires are not eligible for the program.

2. Find your nearest Michelin RV tire dealer at Welcome to Michelin North America RV Website by entering your zip/postal code in the dealer locator. The dealers will be listed in the order closest to your location. Select the dealer that best suits your tire needs.
Call the Dealer

1. Call the dealer and check for availability of the specific size and tread design that you require.

2. Tell the dealer you will be purchasing your tires through Family Motor Coach Association's ADVANTAGE ACCOUNT. FMCA's Michelin Advantage Account number, or Ship-To number, is 1326516. You will need to provide this number to the dealer.

3. The dealer should give you an ESTIMATE on the price of the tires when you make your first call to them.

The ACTUAL discounted tire price will be shown on the invoice that you receive from FMCA a few days after your tires have been installed. Invoices will be sent out Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Any fees for mounting, balancing, state and local taxes, and tire disposal are extra and quoted locally by the servicing dealer, so those fees are not included in the discount program.

4. Schedule an appointment with the dealer and review your order to ensure accuracy.
Example: 8-Michelin 295/80R22.5 XZA2 Energy Load Range J (18Ply).

5. Review the service that is needed. Example: Balance New Valve Stems.
At the Dealer: Evaluate the coach, wheels

Once you have arrived at the dealer for service, walk around the coach with the service writer or salesman. Note any existing damage to the coach and/or wheels. This will protect everyone.
Complete the Purchase with credit card

After the work is finished, you will need a VISA, MasterCard or American Express credit card to complete the transaction at the servicing dealership.

Your credit card will be billed by Michelin, so do not be surprised if you get an invoice from the dealer with a zero balance or an inflated balance. Because of a contract between FMCA and Michelin North America, the dealer is unable to give you an invoice with an accurate price.
Your credit card will be billed the discounted price, not the inflated price.

Be sure to provide your FMCA membership number and e-mail address!

You will also be asked for a P.O. number. Your P.O. number is your FMCA member number and membership expiration date. You must also provide your e-mail address.

Providing your membership number and e-mail address will ensure that you receive your invoice from FMCA.

You should receive your invoice within seven business days from the date of purchase. The transaction is now complete. Enjoy your tires!

Hi Gerard,

When you go to your dealer, you need to tell that that you are on a Nation Account (NA.)  When they hear those two words, they will either say, "We are a NA dealer, what's you account number," or, "We do not handle National Accounts." When I was speaking with the guys at Les Schwab, they told me they do not honor National Account pricing for Michelin as thy are not on Michelin's NA program.  Hope this helps.

Brian,

I just put in the Nac zip code in the Michelin dealer finder listed in the FMCA website info  Welcome to Michelin North America RV Website .

Herman Power Tire in Nac is listed as a Michelin tire dealer with National Accounts so Gerard should be "good to go"  ^.^d if that's where he's pricing his tires. Clicky here ->

I was at my favorite tire place today, Brown's Discount Truck Tires in Sealy, Tx.

For those that have to have Michelin, the XZA3, 275 80 22.5 is $600 per tire tax and all fees included.  Jerry Brown buys take offs for $65 per tire.  So a XZA3 is $535 down the road.

Hankook  AL11 Long Haul Premium Steer Tire 295 75 22.5 is $ 378 less $65 or $313 down the road.

Toyo M147 Premium Steer Tire 295 75 22.5 is $414 less $65 or $349 down the road.

If you need more info, Jerry's phone is 979.885.6063.

Is the $600 Load Range H and is it the FMCA Fleet price? I think you will find the XZA3 are now XZA3+.

Does anyone know the XZA3+ FMCA Fleet Price for275/80R22.5 LR-H.

Re: Tire prices

Barry,

I did not ask the load range, just for XZA3.  I noticed that the Michelin website offers both G and H load range in XZA3 and that they offer a XZA3+ tire also.

Call Jerry and he will quote the tire you specify.

The price is Jerry Brown's price which always includes all taxes and fees.  Plus Jerry pays $65 for take off tires.

I ask about how is business and the reply is most days the trucks are lined up to the corner this summer.  I had to wait for one truck to pull out and then they pulled a truck in and put me behind him and worked on us at the same time.  The other pull through service bay had two trucks in it too.  Jerry's reputation for best price is widely known by the owner operators.

Any agreed price for fleet or FMCA that you might get (I do not know the FMCA price) would need tax and any fees added and the store may or may not pay for take offs.  Some do and so do not.

I seem to remember a post by one of our members in CA that purchased tires for almost $5000 that included a $495 tire disposal fee and a list of other fees including a big one for tax.  So remember Jerry's price is the final price you write the check for.

I've not business with Brown Tire Shop, but have driven past the shop many times traveling between Bellville and Houston. Almost always one or more dump trucks or 18 wheelers are in the shop. They appear to do a brisk business.

Next door is a Rush Truck Center. I went in there one time to buy coolant SCA strips. The folk were courteous and helpful. Their web site indicates that they are a certified service facility for Allison and Cummins. I don't know if "certified" is the same as "authorized." I prefer to have service done in Nacogdoches, but Sealy, TX, appears to have shops for tires and service.

Michelin is very proud of their tires.  I installed Toyo on our U-240.  $2048 for six mounted.  I used golf balls to balance.  Brown's in Sealy, Texas has good prices for Toyo and will buy the takeoffs.  Shop here in PHX (Discount Tires) had similar prices.
