Blu-Ray/DVD/Cat5, etc. (was part of What did you do to your coach today.)

Went to Costco with DW for Christmas shopping. The TV above the dash is flat screen but not HD and only 15" so I checked out the new LED HDTVs... very reasonably priced (24-inch for $179). Then I looked at the BluRay players and found a Toshiba for $59 (with a $10 instant rebate that ended yesterday). This is the cheapest BluRay I've seen - even though the rebate has ended now. We already found a Sanyo 19" HDTV for the bedroom.

Now I have to either get another player for the front TV or try to get HDMI to stretch 30 feet.

I think it would be cheaper and less hassle to just buy another blue ray player...IMHO
 
(edit)...plus you get the flexibility of watching two different DVD's at the same time...if that's importaant to you...grandkids, etc.

30 feet is starting to push the limit for non-active HDMI cables. Active VGA cables are cheap but I have not see any reasonable HDMIs. On the other hand, garden variety HDMI cables are inexpensive and the picture may be OK. Just wanted to let you know in case you are not happy with picture. I went 25 feet with 2 standard HDMIs and it still looked good. Need a dbl female adapter or a extension cable to put two together unless you can find a 30 footer.

HDMI switchers with remote are also really reasonable. Just a push of a button on switcher or remote and the signal heads off on a different cable. See ebay.

Progressive scan DVD players do a great job partially bridging the gap between regular DVDs and Blue-Rays. Hard to see the difference with a smaller screen. This time of year $30-$40 will do the trick. Read reviews online as some better than others. Ours looks almost as good as HD on our 42 inch.

When I was in the audio/video recording business we bought a lot of cables from this company.  Custom Cables, Computer Cables, AC Power Cords, Home Theater audio video Cables,

The have longer lengths of HDMI cables.

Buy the adapters and do HDMI over Cat 5 network cable.

The only quibble I have with progressive scan DVD players is that they don't play BluRay discs and BluRay players play both. We now have a motley collection which mostly consists of DVDs but also contains of a growing set of BluRay discs. Even though we commonly buy the combo (DVD and BluRay in the same package) it seems logical to buy something that plays both. I do agree that the progressive DVD machines are terrific but BluRay on a big screen is incredible. On a small screen.... not so much.

But for $60 or $70 (and with prices coming down every month) BluRay is probably the route to do.

And also easier to get a second player for the reasons Peter mentioned... grandkids and all.

For now the BluRay is going into the top shelf in the closet (where the satellite controller goes) (and I have no idea if that - or the dish on top of the coach - even work LOL). We'll get a 24" HDTV for the front and move the player back and forth for a while I guess. :)

Dave H, I sort a cry, when I built the garage for shop and RV, I ran three Cat 5 wire in ditch with electric and water lines, later when went to hook up the Cat 5, found the landscaper took it upon himself to cut em off and bury the ends.  Now I have to use the Verizon VZAcess wireless.  >:(

DaveM... what the heck was that landscaper thinking? That should be grounds (no pun intended) for some serious body part removal.  >:D

I have enough room for the BluRay player to sit in front of the LED 19.5" HDTV (boy, these skinny television sets are great). I removed the forward flat screen tv and now I'm looking for the perfect size to put up there. Leaning towards 24" to 26". I think 32" might be too big for the space and would interfere with driving vision. There is a standard mount (fixed) but I like those RV/Marine mounts that lock in place.

The little 19.5" set looks pretty good back in the bedroom with an HD BluRay disk in the player. We've never been much for television in the bedroom but it is kinda nice. Makes it easy to nap. LOL

After the TV sets are all settled in I will have to look at changing the 1993 cassette/stereo. It's a nice unit but way out of date. Hope to find something that will just plug in to the existing harness.

I have a 50 ft Non-active cable in my media room. I've found Monoprice to be awesome for good quality cables at a reasonable price. Also, you might want to check out the Wireless HD dongle set from Rocket Fish (Best Buy's brand). Not as cheap as a cable but we sell the wireless chip inside. Plugs right into your HDMI ports and works very well in the demos I've seen!
