black and grey mechanical gages

Have not had good luck with the OEM electronic  senders on our grey and black tanks. they have been replaced numerous times and last for only several days but never more than one trip. Saw where some have installed a mechanical (water seeks its own level) meter system. does anyone have the details on how to install and the tubing and fitting essentials?

My black and gray water tank level indicators (displayed on the monitor) seem to be somewhat misleading. They showed completely empty when we bought the coach (both of them) and the fresh water tank showed completely full. Over a few weeks of using the facilities while we worked on the coach or camped I noticed that while the fresh water tank level was going down there was no indication whatsoever on the black and gray water levels.

While we were at winter cross-country ski camp over the holidays we emptied those two tanks just before we left and there was considerable effluent in both of them. I'm thinking they might broken.

Do the mechanical level indicators need to have holes drilled and tapped into the system?

My black tank gauge is always the problem.  I can add liquid calgon water softener along with a lot of water to the empty black tank via the toilet and leave it for a few days then after emptying the gauge will work for a while and then I have to do it over again.

Our 'mechanical' fresh water tank gauge is a florescent lamp on top of tank and eye-balls looking at side of tank to see water level. We never use city water pressure to flow water through faucets in our coach, so when fresh water is low, gray & black are dumped and fresh water tank filled back up.

We also pretty much follow Barry and Cindy's pattern, except we still use the old Audit system to see when fresh water is getting low. When we refill the fresh water, we watch the level from the outside of the tank. The water level in the tank is visible with our U300.

This seems to me to be the best solution. I have had problems with the water pressure on previous RVs and the idea of never using it makes perfect sense. And dumping when doing a re-fill also makes sense.
