AIR BRAKE CHAMBER
I stopped by Austin Brake and Clutch today and they had a cut away model of a rear wheel brake chamber that I took a picture of. Thought maybe the techies in the group might find it interesting. The primary brake chamber is on the right and the emergency/parking brake chamber is on the left. The yellow part is the spring that applies the emergency/parking brake force. It is shown in the retracted position as when the parking brake is off. The two smaller springs retract the push rods. The right side center push rod is usually much longer when purchased and then is cut to the correct length when the chamber is installed. In this picture the push rods look continuous but are not. Circular disks are welded to the ends of the rods to transmit the forces supplied by the spring or diaphragm as the case may be. A diagram of the chamber will show the parts more clearly, which you can find by googling "air brake chamber". The main parts are held together with the clamps that are bolted together. Never try to dissemble one of these by removing the clamps as the chamber will fly apart with great force. The front wheel brake chambers only have one chamber, the one on the right, no parking brake. I hope the picture is large enough to show some detail.
