Upholstery

We are thinking about recovering the couch and chairs in our GV. Jerry went to get an estimate and almost had a heart attack when they gave him the price. We are currently in Mesa Arizona and won't be back to Texas until February. We were thinking it would be nice to get it done here. Can any of you tell us what we should expect to pay? We are having it measured for screens tomorrow so I was going to ask that company for recommendation. I understand fabric prices vary but a ballpark number would help. TIA.

We had our jack knife couch and 2 chairs done in ultra suede by Mr. Flanagan at FOT. The couch was a complete rebuild $2000. Chairs $800 each. David's crew did a fantastic job. While I did cry a little when I wrote the check I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We had our two chairs (driver & navigator) done in ultraleather by our upholsterer in Benson AZ - ~$700 each. Fantastic improvement!

this may seem like a stupid idea to some but as you are only 2hrs north of the mex border I would take a nice drive down to Hermosillo (another 3 hrs south of border) and have it done down there.
I have had many friends get upholstry done in their coaches and last year one of my RV site neighbours had a chair and couch (bed) done in really nice heavy material and it was just over $500. This was way south of there but surely the prices are similar. I guess it depends on what you get quoted in Phx area. Go along Grand Ave out of town and ask around the Mexican areas there towards Sun City or go to the little town of Guadalupe just south of Baseline and Arizona Mills shopping centre and ask there if anyone knows who does it.

We've decided to replace our dated kitchen swivel chairs with a pair of Parson's chairs. Usually under $200 a pair they are available in many colors and slip over covers are cheaper for a style change. $2K is about the norm for a good job with Ultra suede for a couch. Many of the new microfiber fabrics have phenomenal wear life - drop by your local Lazyboy showroom. You will be amazed. We have a double electric recliner loveseat with center console on order (manufacturerer - Owen, in saddle) for the stick house. I was eyeing it to see about shoehorning it into the coach.

Let me second John Haygarth's suggestion to take a short trip (on good highways, too) down to Hermosillo (the cattle capitol of Sonora, Mexico) and see if you can't get some upholstery work done there for a bargain price.

Hermosillo is only 180 miles south of Nogales on an excellent highway.

Coleen, we will be going past Hermosillo around the end of Dec on way to San Carlos. If you do find out it is worth the trip and you want to you can follow us. We will be going by PHX and Tucson.

A great way to save money and improve quality is to take out the couch yourself. Someone has to do it and most have no idea on how to do it, so don't count on other on not doing damage. If you take it out, any person/shop can do your recovering, even individuals who do not have RV experience. This is a great way to keep costs down. You can also buy your own fabrics at a store like JoAnn Fabrics that have regular half price sales.

On the other hand, UltraLeather is great fabric, but it is never on sale and only sold by a few shops and is expensive, but it feels good and looks good.

John thank you so much for your offer! We are in Mesa until January. I am here working and about to enter my "busy season". I we have an insurance agency and we specialize in Medicare supplement products. Annual election period begins on October 15th and ends December 7th. I am not complaining but once October gets here I don't have a day off until the year ends. I thought sitting here for almost 5 months it might be a good opportunity to get some of this cosmetic stuff done. Since we are in the coach for so long we could enjoy the improvements as well. In my mind I see new upholstery and a cork floor. Making it appear may take magic. <g>

Barry and Cindy I was wondering about having the couch removed. Our wood is in excellent condition and I would have a cow if someone scratched it.

Coleen, I am considering having ours done while in San Carlos as Ruth has never really liked the rusty red material even tho' it is as new. I will take it out as I may be also putting cork fooring in the living area and bedroom. I will also take the cabinets and chairs out so it will be a nice neat install. I am looking at a Eurocork product from Portugal and trying to get it dealer cost as it is almost $7 a sq ft (cheap me I know). We like the "winter Brick" colour and it comes in uniclick panels about 7" x 36". Sold here by Homepage | Europlex. Excellent quality and finish. If we can get it I will take it with us and do that to Mexico too. Give me something to do other than fishing and drinking.

I don't know John fishing and drinking sounds like more fun!

I really like the idea of the cork floor. Jerry is with the screen guy this afternoon while I am at work. I am going to be curious to see if he has any local recommendations that don't require turning over your first born in payment.

Don't go to Hermasillo. Go to Puerto Penasco. Only 65 miles across the border. I got the couch (full J ) in ultrasuede...$600. They took it in and out. 2 dining chairs to match....$75 for both. Full ceramic tile in living and bath.....$500 installed including tile, glue, and grout. 2 captains chairs in faux leather....$225 each. Complete wet sanding and buffing of the exterior to like new shine...$250. Full heavy carpet dash mat cut to fit....$100. Decals stripped off and painted back on....$1200.

Plus.......I had a nice vacation. Oh, yeah. And they do the work right at your RV site. All of it.

It is safe and insurance is $90 (for a year). I've been going there since '94.

Remarkable prices - and sounds as if you are happy with the quality. Did you supply any of the materials, such as ultrasuede?
Can you say who did the upholstery work? Was it done recently?
How long did it take to do the upholstery?

A trip to Puerto penasco seems to be in my future.

I supplied nothing. There are many craftsmen in Mexico with no employment due to bad press. I have no complaints about anything they did. Once you are in a park, you will find whoever you need. The body and fender people are on premises and the others frequently come by looking for work.

I had all of my work done over the last 2 winters. I stay at Playa Bonita RV park. $506/mo full hookups and for a 1 time $20 fee you get 50 amp included. Otherwise it is 30 amp @ 128 volts. Right on the beach.

see I told you they are cheaper!! I have seen lots of different jobs done and vehicles repaired and painted in many places in Mexico and do not have a problem with it. I just check his work first and make sure that the prices are written down and agreed too.
I bought 23 mtrs of Sunbrella for our boat top and coach window covers from a shop in Mazatlan a few yrs ago and it was 1/3rd the cost of here and was the same quality. I like going down to central and more southern Mexico as you get the real Mexican experience and craftsmen there, and a lot less Gringo's around as I go to Mexico to be with them mostly. Not going so far south this year as we are doing other things for a change. Last year I had an auto electrician do some wiring replacement for me on the FT and total cost for 1 hr was $10 ( I gave a good tip as I felt bad)

Z-town is my favorite, John. I forgot to mention.....alloy wheel polishing to new quality.....$40. Total. I love Mexico.
