I consider the D-2 a very important item, I carry one. Once you have the poor air pressure issue, you will want one NOW

And not at all expensive. $15 for a rebuilt one from a truck place. Very common truck spare.

Where is the D-2 govenor and what happens if it goes out? I got an extra air regulator today from NAPA. Thinking about this D-2 as a spare and I assume i have one on my o2 400 Cummings. DAN

How will you know if this d-2 goes out?? Assume either it is open or closed. If compressor is not running OK I can vision that but what if it is open and is running all the time the engine is running. How will you know if it not working?? Assume I have one on my 02 400 cummings. Also can you get one of these at NAPA?/ DAN

the govenor is to regulate the air pressure produced by the compressor so that the brakes and air bags can operate correctly. If your guage shows an erratic behavour and/ or is lower than needed (or higher as mine was) then chances are the Gov is not doing it's job and should be removed and checked out. Mine was allowing the pressure to reach 150, and it turned out to be a broken O ring that was causing a jamb of shuttle. I put a new unit on and repaired the old one. Easy fix. On my coach it is behind the front timing case on right and left of the air dryer.

The D-2 Bendix Governor is a normal item anywhere they handle truck parts, price seems to run from about $15.00 to $35.00 depending on where you buy it. If I was in a strange town, I would look for the NAPA store.

In most cases,if the D2 goes out you will not build air pressure on the gauges.

Yes, the D-2 Gov can do lots of things, once they get alot of moisture and wear, I watch it every so often, like once a day while driving to make sure it runs between about 100 and 120 psi, what ever is normal for your coach, and if it starts to wonder out of the NORMAL range, maybe goes lower then goes up to maybe a little over normal, it is time to replace it before you are STUCK

No need to make this complicated Dan, simply ask for a D-2 Governor, if they do not know what you want, your at the wrong store as everyone that handles truck parts will simply reach back on the shelf and grab one.
But since you asked: Bendix OR275491 X will get you the re manufactured model, still called D-2

I agree with Dave but just make sure it is set to come around 100 psi or better. Some come on a bit lower.

Good point. A check of Napa Online shows 2 ranges, 95-115 or 105-130

NAPA AUTO PARTS

Interestingly, ours comes on at 100 and goes off at 125.

OK, I guess I understand this but... had gauge irregulaties day one. Front was 25 lbs lower than rear. Had OMC in Eugene, Or. work on it. they called FT, ordered ..not a guage but a part to install up front. Gauge for front still reads 7-12 lbs low and OMC told me it's a circuit board thing.
Am I talking about the same thing 'you guys are?'
Now ready to enter FT and it's an item I'd like corrected. [no tools aboard, no place in Florida to play mechanic now, so gotta write the check

do you suggest just getting them to put a D2 in now and save the muss and fuss of a later problem? doesn't sound cost prohibitive.

That is correct Dan. You can also get a repair kit to fix the one you take out so you'll have a spare.

John Tks for all the help I am learning as I go and as things on the forum give me a learning experience. Since I blew a air regulator in Hill City, SD and no one would repair I have learned it is best to know how to do some things yourself. By the way I could not get FOT to return my phone calls for assistance but Keith Davis at MOT gave me the part nr, told me how to replace the regulator and set the correct pressure plus where to go to get the part. He saved my day. DAN

Dan, Keith prior to our recent two month journey just had me buy and carry a spare regulator from NAPA. Seems Dave now has me convinced I need to add the D-2. Based on how my air pressures manage, I need the one around 100 psi - 130 psi, for that seems the range my compressor now works around.

By the way, if you have not built that pressure gauge into an air chuck and hose to use when using the on board air compressor to air up your tires, you may want to give it a try. Works great, forget who suggested it but helps me get to the 110 psi on front tires.

Ron, I had an intermittent air leak when engaging the parking brake. Some times leaked, sometimes not. Coach is at MOT, I told them and I gather they installed a rebuilt park brake "thing"....can only tell you that at times when I pulled on the knob to set the brake, lots of air came out around the shaft behind the brake knob. Not hard to get to I think, take dash cover off. Just FYI.

Mike: I too will add the d-2 to my spare parts list. It appears that there is a lot of use of air on these coaches.
It has been difficult to keep from having an air leak somewhere. I have had FOT fix a leak in my front tank/repack the Orings in the six pack/replaced air regulator on slide/replaced rear air module for coach leveling etc etc.
My gauges stay at about 125 but when in use the aux air compressor will come on once a day for about 10 minutes.
I pulled the fuse when in storage so it will not come on. Nice to have cooler weather. DAN

You can adjust it too. It has a screw under the cover that allows you to set it up or down a bit. Also, if you have it fail on you and you do not have a spare, turn the screw all the way closed then reopen it and you might be able to get on the road again for a short bit till you get a new one.
