1988 Foretravel Deisel

Hi I have someone in my neighborhood who is selling an old (1988) Foretravel deisel 47 Ft motorhome for 8K.  He states that it is in good condition with about 120K miles.  Deisels normally ride well with high milage.  Since I do not know about this much, I guess the question is,  would this be a good price?  He stated when the Motorhome was new it cost over 130K?

Just asking...thanks

Pierce you are probably right.  This guy does not know what he really has because when I called him up just a few hours ago, all he knows is that has a CAT deisel, now a 1985 not 1988, and has 142K miles and he states all it says on both sides is Foretravel and he wants 8K.  As you can see I am somewhat skeptical?  He just told me that it had a 15K engine in it though.  I will have to do a lot me research
thanks Mike

Mike,

Lack of knowledge of the basic specs of a vehicle seldom indicates anything good. It takes a lot of research and effort to keep one of these machines in good operating condition and it just doesn't see realistic (or honest) for an owner not to know what he/she has.

With digital cameras and the internet, I would not think of giving any consideration to a seller that won't promptly send photos/information. In a slow market, sellers have to go the extra mile.

It's been a long time since I haven't counted fingers after a seller's handshake.

Here is pic of 85 that I once had, It had a 3208 Turbo Cat in it.
Is this what the 85 you are looking at looks like.
If so this is a good unit to have, reliable engine, heavy Duty Oshkosh chassis and all the interior bells and whistles that make FT what it is. If this is what it is the price is probably about right.

We had a 84 35 foot Foretravel with the 250 hp Cat turbo 3208. It was a great coach, but we wanted something newer.

I have just bought a 1989 Grand Villa,  Eyes left at my Avatar, Thats it, Its actually a 1988 model, August,

36 foot,  300 Cat pusher, with an Allison 4 speed Auto in it, I paid 15,000-00 for it, But it is in excellent condition,

But I was also looking at a 40 footer for $11,000-00  Same year,  They dont last very long, they get snapped up quick,

Make sure people havent been living in it full time for years, If its been sitting there for years, Not started or driven, all the rubbers will be stuffed, Not a good buy,
Cheers,

MR B2,
Don't confuse the year thing.  Even though it was built in the August of 1988, doesn't make it a 1988 model if it is designated a 1989 on all it paperwork and manufacturer's placards.  It just has a build date of 1988, for all that worth.  Even our auto industry does this stuff.  Our 2013 models are already out, and have been, and they are not 2012 models

And welcome aboard!

It goes the other way, too. Our 1999 U320 was apparently built in 2000.

Hey Brian
Thanks for the reponse.  I will be looking at this 42' 1985 Foretravel over the week-end.  He wants 8K so it sounds reasonable; however, like you said I have a long check list :-)  Any other words of wisdom would be appreciated
thanks again.  BTW how many miles did yours have on it when you purchased?

Umm, I don't think FT made a 42' in 1985.  According to Barry's web site the longest they made that year is 38'.

107,000 miles,  36 foot, I am glad it is a August 1988 model and not a 1989 model as I could not import it if it was made after the 1 Jan 1989, Even tho it is listed as a 1989 model,

They do they same here, its from the first registration that counts, you can have a 10 year old car, register it the first time and its a 2012 model, What a con, you really have to watch the car dealers and check the rego dates,

Words of wisdom, Make sure its his RV that he is selling, not knowing much about a bus your driving or own, sounds very suss, considering he dosent know how long it is, Hahahahaha

I havent seen it as yet, its still in California, Its supposed to be shipped on the 22 December, I will get it about the end of January, Takes five weeks on the boat,

I bought a 1984 Foretravel 38ft with 147000 miles on it.It was great,I kept it for 12 years. It had 297000 miles on it when I sold it for $10.000.It had the Cat 3208,got 11 mpg, here in the west & 12 mpg.east of the Rocky mts.It was a pusher, and very easy to drive. The buyer was a little sceptical of the mpg,but called me later and said it was correct and he was bragging to his friends about the great mpg.I lived in it full time for 5 yrs,it served my wife & I very well.Harry
