check engine code 167

Have a cummins ism450. Have had a check engine light and alarm that comes and goes. Used a scan gauge today to check codes, got id 167, fm 00, cnt 51.
When the check engine light is off, no codes are stored.
Is there a listing of these codes I can check? Talked to Cummins support, was told to bring it in when I had the chance.
Thanks

Try this site for a listing for your numbers and good luck.
Might also check with SilverLeaf / VMSpc outfit.

I Googled cummins error 167 and found this reference

http://www.oshkoshmanuals.com/literature/manuals/operator/s/105-2.pdf

167 is listed under "Suspect Parameter Number (not a direct fault code) is Electrical Charging System

I'm not sure if that's what "id" means on a Scan Gauge, but if it does, perhaps intermittent and not stored would mean a belt slipping?  Loose connection?

Tough to get if the CEL doesn't stay on, but the blink codes using the toggle switch under the dash will help if it does Cummins ISM Engine Codes - After 2002  If you get a 596, 597, or 598 that would agree with Electrical Charging System

Thanks Michelle and Dave. Michelle, I believe the code on the reference you found is probably it. Had to have the voltage regulator replaced at MOT in May, right after we bought the coach. At the time I mentioned the check engine light to Mike Harbordt who has the same model coach. He had had similar problems, said they were caused by low voltage. Seems reasonable, light usually comes on when braking or otherwise at low rpm.
Will do voltage checks at chassis batteries and at alternator. Will have to wait though, currently trying to chase down a plumbing leak.

I wonder if a worn belt tensioner might cause that sort of thing?  Poor tension on the belt at low RPM affecting alternator operation?  Just a thought, of course.  I am far from a mechanic ;)  Easy enough to watch the tensioner operation with the engine running.  There's a video of a good vs. bad somewhere here on the forum.

Michelle,

Here it is: Failed versus a good belt tensioner.

I had that issue and I had one bad battery and that would cause it all the time at start up.
Replaced it and now it is good. I also put a aluminum shield next to the batteries to deflect the heat as it was heat related.
