Fill valve "chatter"

Last couple of times I filled fresh water the fill valve had a vibration or chatter from time to time. Used two different water sources with no air in the hose that would cause something like that. The solenoid valve seems to be the source of the problem.  I thought about taking it apart to look for trash or corrosion but it is behind the water pump and I'd like to have a spare valve on hand if I remove it.

The tank will fill and shut off just as it should. The valve opens and closes as it should. Just makes a lot of noise in the filling process.

Anyone had that problem?

Do you have a brass fill valve that seems quite large compaired to the piping? If so you may have a pilot operated Parker Hannifin Valve, that is what they used on our '97. If the orifice gets partally stopped up it can cause the valve to chatter. It can be taken apart and cleaned. If by chance it is a Parker Hannifin Valve the orifice can be cleaned out with a 1/16" drill bit. They also still have rebuild kits for them. If it is a Parker valve P/M me and I can walk you through a cleaning if you like.

The fill valve in our '03 developed a leak-through back in 2011, but no chatter (the shuttle in the check valve had that noise, but you'd hear it no matter whether you were filling or just running of city water hookup).

Does the fill valve look like ours?  The selected media item is not currently available.

It's a Spartan Scientific part and I don't see the 4600 series on their website anymore.  Will have to dig some...

I believe mine is the Parker. Pilot operated makes sense as a cause of the chatter if there is some trash moving around in there.

I will take it apart tomorrow unless the weather demands a motorcycle ride.

Glad I had the problem. Just moved to "Jr Member" in only 9 1/2 years! 

Most of my answers are already out there somewhere if I just look for them.

That just reminded me that Pamela and Mike had PM'd us a possible Parker replacement for our Spartan valve earlier this year

Rick,

Make sure when you pull the coil off to save the little gold sticker that is under the coil, if it is still there. It has the model number on it for the valve body and is a must have to order a repair kit.

Another tidbit is to use your fingers to run the drill bit not a drill motor. You don't want to break off the drill bit.
