travel destinations for two or three week trips

Being here in Texas the weather has been up and down and not the norm.  Wanted to make a trip to Colorado or to Utah but each time looks good the snow comes into Denver or everyone indicated Utah is too hot for the summer.  Looking at Florida but now the kids may be at the theme parks.  Looking at Memphis/Nashville and Chattanooga.  I know just go it will work out. What are your ideas for  2 to 3 week trips?  Made the Mt Rushmore/Yellowstone last summer it was the best so far.  Tks DAN

Dan,
My usual rule of thumb for a 2 to 3 week trip is to draw a 700 mile circle from where I am and see what's available to do.  What you like to do determines the POI's to stay at and see/do.  (No pun intended if you like jet ski's)

Parts of Utah are warm in the summer but the Monument Valley area is just great and if it gets too hot, head over to the Durango, Colorado to Pagosa Springs area. Higher altitude and never too hot in summer. We were between Monument and Moab when Ken made a left turn in front of us in their U300. Some nice towns with RV campgrounds on that road.

Dan, we are in St. Augustine, FL and have been for a couple of months. So far the weather has been pretty good, there is lots to do here and sights to see and the atmosphere is our favorite in all of Florida, its pretty laid back but still a little resorty with some of the nicest beaches anywhere.

Saint Augustine is the oldest, continuously occupied city in America. It was founded before Jamestown so there are lots of historical sights. Come on over.

Don't count out the desert, as I have seen weeks in the summer with lower temps in Moab UT, than here in Ft. Worth.  And as suggested, you can always gain some altitude and cool off, in CO.

I like the suggestion of Peter's 700 mile radius.  We have had some great trips with that plan.  We also enjoy more the circle route, than the out and back ones.  Plus you can go slow or stay too long and then just short cut across the middle back as needed.

Another thing we have done is lay a 2" wide clear ruler on the atlas heading somewhere, and then look at what we can zig and zag to see.  We also like to leave with little or no plans.  Then as you meet and talk to people, get their input on what they like and see.  I once rode the BMW for 11 days and on only one day got to the planned end of the day without getting off "track".  Turns out that day we did not speak to any English speaking Americans, but only to foreign visitors, who might have been as lost as us.  Turned out to be one of the best ever bike trips.  2700 miles, and only 57 miles on interstates.

Three weeks is an eternity for me.  You have so many places to see. I would pick a direction and go. Check out going north. Upstate NY s pretty and three days or four depending nowhere. See the hall if fame Watkins glen, Corning, mountains, and the wine country of the finger lakes. See niagra falls too. You can stop and visit stuff on the way there too. Memphis and Chattenooga, longaberger baket in Ohio and other neat stuff.

Hmm.  Watch John S suggestions as he really likes to drive his coaches...  A lot!  Like "I'm Hungary for Mexican food, I think I will drive to NAC for dinner!"  Just kidding, his suggestions are top notch!

Have you ever been to China Date Ranch? ( southern end of Death Valley National Park. It is 50 miles north of Interstate 15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas China Ranch Date Farm)  One of the coolest places to visit - but use your CAR from the RV park.  RV won't fit :)  I know - wrong direction - especially in the summer.

Oatman, AZ (Oatman, Arizona - A Living Ghost Town) Feed the donkeys walking along the street.  Another use the car trip from the RV park.

Another nice drive would be the Natchez Trace Trail Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail - Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail

Memphis - A disappointment for us.  Good BBQ, but bad everything else.  Wouldn't go back.
Been to Nashville, TN and toured the Grand Old Opry (Grand Ole Opry - Opry.com).  That was interesting and fun.  RV info: RV Information - Opry.com

And there's always just sitting in the sun along the Gulf and eating all the seafood you want :)

Be sure to go to Moab and all through Utah and Durango (I'm going back this year), Texas Hill Country area is great with a lot to do and many small towns to visit especially in Spring time with all the wild flowers, Western Kentucky is great with small towns and lakes, Gulf Shores in the spring with all the golf and seafood, Santa Fe is always a good trip, Arizona is wonderful with Sedona and great scenery all throughout the state, North Shore of Lake Superior is beautiful and a "must do", Michigan UP especially around Petoska (?),  Carolinas are always waiting for you just about anytime of year with golf, mountains, great food and people, Vancover BC and Oregon/Washington coastline is breathtaking, visit Pigeon Forge and New England in the Fall and don't forget Yosemite, Glacier and all the western national parks!

There you have it.....3 years worth of travel to do in 2 or 3 weeks......good luck and see you "on the road"!!
