Remote start switch with ignition off?

I was reading the Unknown Solenoid post and I have a question about the remote start feature. I replaced some worn looking hydraulic hoses and I thought I would try my remote start panel. I did not think it would work because I did not have my key ignition on. I tried it and it started right up. I shut if off right away thinking I might do some alternator damage. Alternator seems fine. Question is should it start at the remote panel with the key off? Thanks, Mark

Mark,

The rear switch powers up the computer in ours and the button engages the starter. Same with my old bus. Front key does not have to be on.

Mark, If you start the engine with the rear remote start and then try later to shut it down with the ignition key you will find that that will not work.  I have done this and at the end of a trip had to get out, raise the hatch and shut down with the rear switch.  Turning the key on up front before starting from the rear will allow you to shut down from the front rather than the rear.
Gets complicated don't it ?

Thanks Gary and Pierce.Pierce I'm sure you can understand my alternator damage concerns [diodes] Fire dept mechanics were always mad at someone for shutting off the battery switch before the engine. Gary, I had a water leak around my front clearance lights and after a search I bought the lights you used. Thanks, Mark
