Water Pump Leak 6v92

Had the coach into Stewart & Stevenson for service and asked about the small amount a water I keep seeing on the water hose beneath the water pump. I suspected the hose clamp and had them replace it. The mechanic said it could be the water pump and showed me where the weep hole on the back of the pump was so I could check it. Also said to check after I had run it for a while. Drove it home and checked and sure enough it's leaking out the weep hole.

Has anyone been down this path? I've found several 6v92 water pumps on ebay for less then a $100. That seems almost too cheap. Found a rebuild kit alone that was $175! Anyway what do you guys think?

The water pump is right in plain sight on the back err make that front of the engine. Is this something I can replace? Any special tools required? Any special techniques? Anything to watch for?

I just replaced mine on my M11 and it was a bit of work for the tech.  I would bet Dave M knows what he is saying though.  It was leaking on me too and I decided to change it before it let go.

The DD water pump on the 92  is easy if you have any mechanic skill at all, easier than most cars, just larger everything.

Ken,
I would get it from DD.  In 2003 I purchased a new one from DD (had a mechanic install it - so no advice there, labor was $266).  Pump was $204 (plus refundable core of $189).  So not much more money to make sure you get a quality part.  I replaced mine because the mechanic "thought" the impeller might be slipping and causing overheating.  Turned out the old one was fine.

I'd replace the 2 thermostats while you are at it. Ernie- former 6v92 owner, now with an 8v92

Dave,

Yep, but not so easy if you have the rear radiator model. Feel for anyone trying to get in the back.

Pierce, amen bro. They are nifty coaches as long as some else does the engine scramble ;D
Bro Brad had one, a nice unit w/ retarder etc, but replacing radiator or anything on the 6V-92 was no joy. Ken has the 1992, that is a side rad ?

@Dave Yep side radiator. Wouldn't even consider changing out the water pump myself if it was a rear radiator. I know my limitations. :)

I'll be pricing out a new water pump on Monday. If in the $200 range will go with that if not I'll be trying out one of the rebuilts on ebay. Will keep my old pump and have it rebuilt if the ebay rebuild fails down road.

Ken,
Some times we are just lucky, and as for the rebuilt water pump, I would be looking at DD Reliabuilt pump & gasket, even both hoses.  Geez, this bring back memories, the water pumps come in 3 varities, standling, walking and running styles, would guess on the 6V there would be two, standing and running.  DD made so many versions of everything

Thanks Dave. Reliabuilt was the key word I needed. Found one on ebay.

Now I need to figure out if I have a walking or running pump. I'm pretty sure the one in the link above is a running and which makes me believe mine is a walking. I'll have to take some pictures when I can get back to the coach.

The 8V pump is different,  find on a valve cover the list of items used, if the water pump is different, it will have a number for it, not a part# but a code that they can match,

I think Dave is talking about this.  I took this picture several years ago.
It's a good idea to take a good picture of it in case it gets hard to read down the road in a few years.  Print it out and put in your coach binder.

Yes, use both the w/p number and the serial number O6VF---------- listed along the lower edge will get what you need.
