Back-up camera and monitor replacement

I know this topic has been posted in the past but I couldn't find any current information.  I apologize if it's there and I didn't look deep enough.  I would like to replace the original backup camera and monitor in our 99 U295.  It has the lighted dash so I've learned from the forum that I need to surface mount the new monitor.  What cameras and monitors have been successful used?  If you have a link to the supplier that would be great.

Thanks in advance for all the help I know I'm about to receive.

Go to RVCAMS. COM.

when you get the phone no. Ask for Tim Lazaroe. He's the owner and most knowledgeable re: Foretravels. Let him know your needs, including whether you want to synch your Audit with the new monitor. I bought a new system from him in April. Works great.

Larry,

Phone no. for RVCams.com is 877-378-2267.  I bought a 7" monitor that I just Velcroed to the outer surface of our dash.  Be sure to get one that "normalizes" the image, i.e., has an option to reverse the image.  Otherwise the gauge readings from the Audit and the rear image will be reversed.  Tim will suggest the monitors that have that option.  They will include all of the wire/cable adapters necessary to use your existing cable run.  A few you will have to pay for, but they're not expensive.

Bought a voyager system from them today.  Some of you fabricators out there are alleged to have welded up an internal mount to replace the Foretravel setup under the rear cap.  Do tell.

I replaced ours in fairly short order by a trip to Camping World. We were down that way for other shopping anyway, and bought a wireless camera and monitor set that was on sale. It didn't take too long to get the old camera out. There was a pretty large hole for the power cord to come in, which made that part easy. I traced the "face" of the old camera and cut some thin plywood and heavy white plastic that size. I was able to use the two original mounting holes to hold everything in place. The camera is mounted to the piece of plywood with the white plastic between the camera and wood. A bit of caulk keeps the bugs out.

The monitor was a bit of a challenge at first, but I finally found out that it will attach nicely to the original dash-mounted monitor. That keeps it in view but doesn't block my view of the road.

Does anyone know of a monitor that can also be used for the VMSpc, audit monitor and backup camera?  I will call RVcams.com on Monday for his thoughts.

Thanks.

since I like both rear camera and VMSpc on at the same time, I am happy with two dedicated monitors.

Course you go do the all electronic dash upgrade like John Christman did a few years ago.....or order that new FT in your own colors!

Named the coach and the TOAD, I like that - DW calls it "the Bus"

Camera & 7" monitor from amazon $60. I posted some pictures. Unhook the Audit camera connection and connected to new monitor with a S video adapter from Radio Shack $5 and did the same for camera connection in the back. works very nice.

I finally made contact with Tim at RVCAMS today.  The smallest monitor he sells with reverse image capability is the 7" Voyager.  Now I need to decide if I want to relocate generator switches to make room to surface mount the 7" monitor.

Larry,
I installed a Jensen single din radio with flip out monitor as my back-up monitor.  It has reverse image and a usb port for my music.  I just bought a piece of black abs to cover the hole in the dash and it really only shows about one inch on the top.  The only switch that even get close to being covered is the auto gen which I leave on anyway.  You can still turn it on and off as the monitor just misses the switch.

I installed a SPST switch in the old dimmer hole that I use when I park (it acts as a reverse back up and just needs a ground).  I just flip it on when I park and then all I do to check my levels is turn the monitor switch on.  This turns the radio on and then when I switch the monitor off the radio turns itself off.  They do not make my model anymore, but the UV10 is the one that replaced mine.  I always leave my rear camera on when I'm towing and it was worked great for two years.  I first had a 5.4 inch headset monitor that only lasted about 6 months (it was only $40 so I should have known).
