More Camera Talk

While traveling across West Texas yesterday, the chrome extension on my exhaust broke loose and is on the side of the road somewhere. We heard the noise, stopped but at that time could not see the problem.

As we ventured on the rear monitor started fading and finally went our completely. When we stopped for the night I inspected the coach again and found the exhaust issue. The heat and exhaust would rise through the back cap when stopped and at slower speeds. It melted part of the tail light above the exhaust and it is apparent that that's why the rear camera is not functioning.

All my other lighting on the rear caps appears OK.

I opened the inspection hole from the inside rear cabinet but could not find any issues with the wiring that were visible. Loots of soot though. I could not get to the very corner to inspect the wiring without going into major surgery.

I am thinking that the wiring is ok but the camera did not handle the heat as well.

Is there an easy way to test the camera?

If the camera checks out OK, can I splice the wire from the side inspection panel and pull a new one from that point across the back to the camera? If not has anyone replaced the wiring from the rear to the dash and what is involved to do this?

By the way, I found a new chrome extension to go on the exhaust pipe after removal of the "what's left old pipe." $100 in parts and about 2.5 hours labor and it's fixed.

Can not offer much on the camera, but it sounds like the perfect time to convert from the OEM muffler to the much improved resonator and enjoy more pep and cooler engine compartment.
