Black dust on right rear wheel

The right rear outside wheel has a considerable amount of black dust on the rim. I suspect that it is break pad dust, but am not sure. Any ideas what it can be and how to fix it. Thanks, Larry

Yes, brake dust is the likely source.  But if lots more on one side, you need to make certain that the brake is not hanging up/staying on.

So, drive a couple of miles, stop and check temperature with IR gun or gingerly with your finger.  If hotter than the other side, you need the brakes serviced.

Servicing includes cleaning the slide pins and PROPERLY lubing with clay-based grease.  The new spring kits are highly recommended to keep pads off the disks.  Fit them when servicing the brakes.

If you find that is the cause, look carefully at both sides of the brake disk.  Replace if any sign of overheating (blue color) or checking (small cracks).

Thank you for you help. After going back to the storage unit and further inspection, I have determined that it is either road tar or the new tires (1400 miles) are putting off a black oily substance. Upon closer inspection it appears that all the tires and rims have the substance except the right rear had considerably more. Also, as far as I could tell, the back inside tires did not have as much of the substance and they are closer to the brake rotors.

If you suspect excess debris from the tire, check tire pressure.  A low tire will overheat and certainly give off more rubber.

Look carefully at the circumference of the tire-- just out from the rim for any sign of change in color or texture.

Normally, tire dust is lightly deposited behind a wheel position, not on the rim.
