The new heater element arrived yesterday, but too late for me to work on the coach, so after lunch today I went out. Getting the old cord off and out, and the new one in was pretty easy. Then the fun began. I can't get the old element to turn - at all. I've sprayed the threads with PB Blaster and put on my biggest pipe wrench. That one has an angled head so in theory I should be able to turn it. No go. The only cheater pipe I could find wouldn't fit that wrench, so I tried the middle size pipe wrench. Cheater pipe fits on it nicely, but runs into the body of the coach. I decided to spray it one more time and let it soak overnight. I'm pretty sure that somewhere I have some pipe that will go over the handle of that pipe wrench, but just where it is hiding I don't know. I may have to look for something else.

Of course my arm is too short to reach the pipe wrench from inside the coach. If I could reach the handle from inside I'm pretty sure that i could pull up on it enough to break it loose. I'll try again tomorrow. Time for a cup of coffee now.

Well, I got the element out. Unfortunately, it was screwed into an adapter, so I sprayed the adapter with the PB Blaster. Tomorrow I'll see if I can get it loose.

David,

 A socket, breaker bar and a pipe might be needed. A used American breaker bar from Craigslist, etc would be better than a new import especially if it has an extension on it. Bet you're going to have to go out 4 feet from the hex to get it off.

After breakfast!

I sprayed it already, and will let it sit overnight. I might go out after supper and spray it again if I'm feeling ambitious. I probably should have let the coolant run out when I had the element out, but since we have an outdoor cat I wanted to dilute it as much as possible right away. I don't think much more will come out tomorrow, and I'll have water running when I take the old element out since it is just finger tight now.

David, if you have a small hand held propane torch you might try putting a little heat on the body the fitting is screwed into, if you can do it without damaging anything. Just enough to warm it up a little it will also help the Pb Blaster penetrate the threads.

The new heater element is in (finally) and the coach is buttoned up, ready for the nasty weather that is on the way. I wasn't able to refill the coolant I lost before it got too cold to work, but it is supposed to warm up again next week, so I can work on it then. I'm guessing I lost about a gallon of coolant.

The breaker bar didn't work (it started bending), but the pipe wrench with the help of a 30" bar got it started, and then it was an easy job from there.
