Power cord reel on my 1999 U320

I Ned to replace the cord on my spring operated reel (it's red). The cord is damaged about 4' from the reel for about 3 or 4 ft. Is there any thing I should be aware of prior to opening the cover on the reel? Things with springs can be scary sometimes!

I have also been having problems with the reel stoping when I pull it out. Both stoping on the way out and then not being able to stop it from retrieving when I extend it.

Any information on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Phil

I have had the water line one apart and nothing really difficult except to say when off do not pull cord off as that "loads" the spring up. Sounds like the little metal "dog" is causing your problems and to get to it you do have to dissasemble. If you can manage with a shorter cable why not just pull out what is damaged and cut that section off and reattach the plug?

I frequently use the full length of the wire. So I don't want to make it any shorter.

As for the "dog" how complicated is it to get into the area and what am I looking for?

We carry an extension. There's no problem with the cord on the reel. Just some sites need all the wire we have.

I use a little WD40 on the dog when it starts hanging up.

I am finally getting around to the cord replacement. I ordered a 50 amp RV cord on Amazon and now that I have removed my old cord I see that it is 6/4 with soft playable copper strands and soft jacket. It is the picture with the white letters. The new replacement cord (made in china) has markings that say 6 AWG and 8 AWG. It is smaller diameter with harder copper strands and jacket. The romex that is in the coach is #6/3 anyway.

Any thoughts on whether I should use this or find something more like what was on the reel?

If it were me I would look for the same type that was originally there.

If the Amazon cord has molded male & female ends, it can be used as a 50-amp extension cable. The photo of cord rating does not show 6 & 8 awg.

I see no reason why your Amazon cord cannot be used on your reel, if it rolls up ok. Usually #6 & #8 on the same 50-amp cable means black, red, white hot & neutral as #6 and green ground as #8, which is ok for your coach.

What is wrong with your original cord? New male 50-amp plug can be attached to an existing cord if the original plug is the problem.

I would certainly see how the new cord handles when it is very cold (down about freezing).  Some can get so stiff you can hardly get them to go on the reel.  Find a frig or freezer to chill it in if you're not in Ohio like we are :))

The original cord is damaged. I spent a couple hours searching online and it is difficult to tell what you will get if you order a replacement. I may call fore travel monday and see what they have. One advantage to using the new one is the smaller diameter. The old one was very tight where it connected to the reel and it would rub on the top if the roll was not staggered on the retrieve.

Take your old cord to a good electric supply house and tell them you want the same wire in the number of feet you need, most likely it will be 6/4 SO cord.

Bill has it right, any electrical supply can sell you the cord cheaper than the ready made.  You will pay a premium for GOOD ends, I recently had to replace the male 50AMP and it was 50 bucks so plan accordingly.
