Cummins ISX-800 Horse Power ?

A while back I had a chit chat with the manager at Cummins Atlantic , in Richmond , VA.  He was pleased to see my ISX-650 and said it the first one he has seen as trucks don't have them much HP  around here . The question came up as to how much power can you get out of the ISX engine . He stated that Cummins makes them at 8oo HP for the truck trains in Australia on a regular bases . He said it can do more HP for certain other applications as well . Here in the USA , we don't have a automatic transmission that can take that much power yet for over the road use . My guess the engine might not  be able to pass muster with the (EPA) , so the dream goes on . ::) ::) ::)  Brad Metzger

Well if your going to dream , and I do , I can see that 800 HP on the back end of my coach . ;D  And I can also look in the rear view mirror only to see a large puff of black and white smoke along with a bunch of small parts bouncing on the road surface . ??? That transmission just couldn't cut it . Like I said the (dream thing) Why not . Who knows , this might come to pass one day . :) :) :)  Life is short , have some fun while you can .                Brad Metzger

I have had 2 ISX 600 hp in work trucks.. They would push 80,000 lbs at any speed you chose.. 1 of the reasons we went to the 450 hp version.. hiring drivers from the driver pool you will ocasionally if not often get a young man who likes to turn broken highway lines into solid ones.. can't have that because of the money left on the road.. a 600 in a 30.000 lb coach should run like a Corvette and I wouldn't mind having 1 as with a coach we are automatically going to leave money on the road and that is a given... I have more experience with diesel trucks but I hope to turn that around in a couple years.. May very well get another ISX 600 or 750.... who knows.. put a straight 6 in pipe out the back and announce my arrival.. sound awesome.

The next question -----would I buy one if Foretravel would build a coach with that engine in it ?? You bet , most likely today . The one I have does just fine , but-------more power , yes , I would have to do that . This goes back to that (want thing) , need doesn't enter the picture .              Brad Metzger

Just a note:
ISM 500  30,000 lb = 60 lb/hp  19.5 lb/ft lb  as in my 320, 36'
ISX 800  50,000 lb = 63 lb/hp  22.7 lb/ft lb  as in the new wannabee.
The numbers do not lie.
My next coach if they go with the 800 hp area, would be the Phenix 38',
Would be 52.5 lb/hp  19.1 lb/ft lb  starting to get more interesting.
You wonder why I smile ?

Love the power to weight ratio thread.  I used to weigh all my show coaches and put the weight slip in the coach for people to see.  Good conversation starter.

Favorite was B2's 300 cat ored.

Monaco built 444 hp/1850 foot pound torque n14 mechanical diesels in 1990 in 40' signatures.  30k weight.

And then Foretravels series 60 Detroit prototype unicoach.

More motor.  Easier to drive.

The cummins 444 was a horse in a diesel truck....... back in the 70's cummins came out with a six headed engine that came in 450 hp and the KTA version was a 600 hp... In the 70's that was quiet a performance package to have in a Arkansas to California "chicken truck". A few young foolish fellas made a name for themselves with other truckers and some law enforcement agency's. Pardon me for all the reference to trucking but that is where my life's work has been spent.

dub,
We also live the truck, bus & industrial diesel engine world, agree on the K1150 Cummins engine, we also did the turbo compound (twin turbo) up to the 750 hp @ 1800 rpm, 400 w genset.
Most do not get it.
my best toy, 12V-71 in a MC7 w/RTO910, 3.73, 480 rev per mile 11R24.5. ;D

750 hp for 400 w?
Rather inefficient.

Good thing!

Am I reading your post correctly that your 2001 u320 36 has a 500 hp engine? I am new to the Foretravel family and I realize that a coach can have almost any modification, but I have not seen any coaches earlier than 2004 with a 500 hp engine. Just curious.

Larry,
Yes, I have the 2001 ISM450 U320, 36' and I have done two items to improve the performance end of it.
1st Removed the origional Cowl muffler, and installed the Walker 5" Resonator, Biggie gain.
2nd Had Cummins upgrade the engine to the ISM500 setting, required a different turbo, had to add the control device to the intake manifold to sense turbo boost that is controlled by the ECM, then they re calibrated the ECM for the 500 hp and 1550 ft lb rating.
The guru at Cummins said, that combo they came up with would be the strongest ISM500 around.
So between the resonator and the new setup, it is a joy to drive.
All with Cummins approval.
Resonator cost about #150.00 pqrts.
Upgrade by Cummins $3,250.00 aprox.
Would do it again quickly if needed.

So we turn an isx up to 800 to run an Aussie road train. Rather begs the question, are we still talking MPG or do we have to flip over to GPM?

All DP rv'ers deep down want more power.  My favorite thing in presenting a grand villa 300 cat ored was to have the customer driving and to be talking in his ear on a long straight road with little traffic.

Invariably they would finally  comment that the coach was a little wind noisy.

I would tell them to look down at the speedo.

"OMG were going 85mph!  Honey,  this is for us."

I can talk quietly with a passenger in the rear swivel seat while travelling,

I am quite surprised how little noise my coach makes, I can hear the engine, Just,

But it isnt intrusive, What wind noise, Close the window, No noise,

Road trains here are a thing on their own, 3 Tri axle trailers, They take up the whole road, You move over for them, or off the road, its safer, as they go past,

They chuck up big rocks and gravel, Passing one is hairy, They fold around you as you go past, Like a snake winding down the road,

15 speed road ranger gear boxes, Split diffs, Etc Etc, Auto's, No Idea,

130 tons in one truck needs a real Big Motor,

MPG is divided by 3, as you are three trucks in one, Max 3 trailers now, But they did used to pull seven trailers,

I was reading a few years back, That one trucky driving a Road Train, Changed gears, fifteen hundred times in 300 miles,

Big motor cruising is cheaper in the long run, than a small motor wringing  its heart out for the same speed and mileage,

I love my 300 Horsies, But I think if it was less than 300 HP, It would be a lot slower, Less Grunt, And would struggle on

some of our wild hilly roads, And especially my drive way, 1 in 3,

Our EPA is a lot tougher than yours, We have more Greenies here, Exhaust systems are a nightmare here,

I got away with a loophole in the law, Other wise I would have had to have a vertical exhaust 3 metres in the air, and it looks terrible,
RV, Bus, Coach, motor home, Must have an exhaust, vertical and 3 metres high, With a 45 degree turn on the top,

Mines registered as a home made Caravan,  Loop Hole, Foretravel and Grand Villa didnt come up on their computer,

So you cant have it, Fine, Home made caravan it is, Saved me a grand on the exhaust, Ripper Deal, Ill take it,

Do you notice a rear axle slight howling?  Notice able under power.  Goes away when not under power.
