Replaced original Sharp convection microwave model with a new Sharp model

We replaced our original Sharp convection microwave model with a new Sharp model.  The original microwave was still working just fine and over the years we have fixed a fuse holder (would not run) and replaced convection thermistor (convection overheated), but we figured we were in the right place to update our microwave.  We prefer Sharp convection units as they have a good repair history and work well when installed right against a side wall because the door hinge is 1-3/4" from wall and there is no door handle sticking out.  It comes in several colors, but black matches our Whirlpool electric refrigerator, which is next to microwave.

We have microwave power plug on a switch so it is disconnected from shore power when not needed, to help prevent damage from unplugging shore power or starting generator, etc.  And Sharp does not require a clock set after power has been removed.

In the past, we had taken our original unit out to replace thermistor, so we knew what we were up against in lifting it out, but we were not sure what it was going to take to install the new style wall mounting plate.

Barry,

Did the wall mount come with it or did you have to order it separately?

Thanks,

Greetings,

Just installed a Samsung - not meaning to interrupt your topic..

I saw that yours was an 850 watt is that the original? Since mine dumped,  just wondering.

I put in a 1000 watt, still within inverted capabilities.
Thanks

My coaches previous owners,  Richard and Betty Bark,  installed that same unit in my coach.  Works well even with my old non full wave inverter. Thanks for the nice work.

We have the new Sharp ready to install but haven't been able to remove the existing microwave (Sharp R-1831B).  Try as we might, the locking tab/levers won't release, in fact they won't come down more than 1/4".  The microwave has no movement at all (back, forward, up, down).  We've taken out the screws at the top front Barry mentioned and removed the plastic covered screws securing the locking tabs.
We are wondering if anyone else has run into a similar problem?

Grant, I don't know if this will help... but a couple of years ago George installed our new Sharp R-1875T.  However, our old unit was a Sharp-1870, not an R-1831B.  But, just in case, here's his procedure for removal/installation:  Removal of Microwave (Sharp R-1870)

Yep, thats all the rear tabs come down 1/4"or so, believe me they are unhooked.

John H told me to keep looking for screws and guess what found one behind the top right void space, in my u280.

Grand there are screws in the sides also. 3 were in my spice rack. Sorry I didnt see your coach type.

Success!
One last screw, through the wall of the cabinet over the sink and into the side of the microwave, the screw head was hidden behind a light switch cover!
Thanks John, Pat/George and Barry/Cindy.  Also, good idea to use the ottoman.

Grant... glad George's post helped (as did the ottoman suggestion! :)) ).

I was a little startled by the readings from your refrigerator/freezer thermometer (we have the same Chaney unit, and mount it on the side of the microwave, too!).... until I realized it was Celsius!  :o  :P  :P

George and Grant,
Thanks to both of you.  I had read George's account earlier but I somehow missed that sneaky side screw.  I had tried to remove my microwave some time ago for some backsplash work and could never get it loose.  I knew I was missing something but never figured it out till now.

@Grant thanks for the pics! I tried to pull mine last year sometime and while I got the rear support undone the microwave still wouldn't come out. Just checked my cabinet and see the same switch cover.

Looks like baby is getting a new microwave!

Thanks to the instructions from  Barry & Cindy and the help from Patricia/George & John - we now have our new Sharp R-1871T in place and working!
Here are a few more photos.  However, other than the one hard-to-find screw ( ), we can't add anything to the instructions Barry & Cindy posted earlier.
Thanks all!

Yes, on the older models they sure hid those screws as it took me a while to figure out it was hiding behind the halogen plastic protection cover. That is why I told " foureye" to keep using them (eyes). His was in same place as mine.

We have our microwave/convention replacement scheduled for this weekend. This thread is VERY helpful! Quick follow up question.

Q) What type of screws should I use for the new mounting plate?  Metal? Self tapping? Wood? Length?

Are you going with another Sharp microwave? If so, there's a good chance you'll just be able to reuse the existing mounting plate.

Sorry this doesn't answer your question directly. You're likely not going to get a stud where you need it, much less multiple, for the mounting plate so you'll have a thin layer of wood (1/4"? need someone to confirm this) and then foam to work with. So it'll be a matter of quantity over quality. Much of the weight of the my microwave was actually held by long wood screws that went into the cabinets from above the front faceplate.
