91 GV ORED Towing Question

Hi, I've poked around on the forum a bit, and can't find the answer.

I have a 1991 37' GV ORED, and the former owner used to pull a toad, but I never have.

What would you think about towing a car hauler that in total weighs about 7,000 pounds..?

Your coach has a 20500# GVWR, found at beamalarm.com, motor home links, brochures-then look for your 36' model.

On my 88, I towed 5800# 4WDdown truck, and 4000# on 1200# tow dolly -successfully. I had a 300hp cat 3208. I felt it on grades up and down.

Tounge weight with what your proposing would concern me.
Just thinking through this, 7000# seems limiting.

Depends on the topo where you are going to use it the most. It will slow you down on the hills and I would want to have brakes on the toad with that much weight. If you don't have transmission lockup, it will raise the tranny temp. If you have ANY kind of cooling issues, they will really get a lot worse in warm weather. Mileage will suffer too, especially in the hills.

We are expecting our Euro relatives to visit summer after next and Yellowstone is number one on their list. We can't all fit in the RAV4 so may tow a VW Vanagon four down. No where near seven thousand but still has me planning on fitting brakes to it.

Dave, I think it would depend what you were putting in the trailer. My 24 ft. 8 ft. enclosed weights 3500 lbs. I pull a Ford Flex flat that weighs 4300 lbs. empty. So putting the Flex in the trailer would exceed your trailer's GVW. The 7000 lbs. is the weight limit the manufacturer rated the trailer at. If you are loading it with a couple of motorcycles and maybe a golf cart you should be fine. As the others said depending on the topo you should only notice it on the hills and watch the transmission temperature.
