Hardwired Surge Guard

I suppose any surge guard is better than none at all.  Anyone know anything about this one currently on sale at CW? 50A Hardwire Surge Guard - TRC 34560-004 - Surge Protectors - Camping World  I think what most people have been installing is another brand, which I have forgotten, but could look up.  Not sure where this one is made.  Thanks

I used that one in my last two coaches.  It worked well. It saved my last coach at FOT parking lot in fact.  My current coach had one too but it was hit at Disney with bad poke and surge.  It did its job but it was hard to see what the issue is. I have a progressive with remote display. I got tired of the two min 37 sec to check the power.

We used to use a portable Surge Guard.  Now we have a hardwired Progressive EMS-HW50C with an additional remote display (one display in the utility bay, the other inside near the powerline monitor display)

Best price at the time was here Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C Hardwire Surge Protector 50 Amp

I used the Progressive 50 amp hard wired model as well.  It wasn't too hard to put in once I identified all the parts already in the coach.  I used the appropriate sized fine strand wire that I picked up at Home Depot for about $5/ft.  i only needed about 4 ft.  These work very well. I am surprised how many parks are miswired and how many older parks have voltage issues.

Good thing to add to your coach.

I like this one for $109.98 at Amazon:

Amazon.com: Progressive Industries SSP50 Smart Surge: Automotive

It's not hardwired but I have a separate 50amp cord for outside I can use to keep it locked in the utility bay connected to the cord on the reel.

Anything wrong with this product or my proposed use of it?  It is from Progressive Industries.

best, paul

It's solely a surge protector and does nothing to protect you against low voltage (a common problem) or miswiring.  Better than nothing but in no way as good as something like their EMS units.

I agree with Michelle.  Good surge protection but mine has been much more useful in low voltage situations and even worse, mis-wired posts.

Mine refused to connect to a post in a Florida State Park about 2 months ago. They sent a service guy over and he checked it out and it was indeed wired improperly and had been that way for maybe years. He told me some guy was in a site near mine a week earlier when it had been raining a lot and was getting tingling sort of shocks when he grabbed on to the the hand bar at the door of his 5th wheel!  He was the ground path!

Better safe than sorry.  There is a lot in your coach that won't like low voltage or other mis-wired issues, especially you.

I too now use progressive but the surge guard will shut down power if you get low voltage too. I had it save me that way too.  The one you plug into a pole looks like just a surge protection. I have had two surges and many more low voltage situation, so that is very important.

I too have the Progressive EMS-HW50C.  It shut the coach down when the voltage went high before any damage could be done.  Also has shut down on low voltages.  I am happy with it.

I also use the EMSPT 50 c model. Once it goes through its self checks, I'm good to go.

For some reason I thought my 03 U320 had a electrical protection system installed during the build.  Am I, well, hate t say it, wrong?  David

Add one more vote for the EMS hard wired. Had a problem in North Georgia last year on arrival. I thought something was wrong with the pigtail plug as we could not register power when first plugged in. After a little investigation it was found to be trouble at the pole and the EMS was doing its job.  I would not settle for anything less. It only costs a little bit bit more for solid piece of mind, especially with electricity. The damage happens too fast.

Surge-Guard:
No remote readout
No bypass switch
Electric terminals not fully protected
No Lifetime warranty to replace parts and send in for repair and for firmware updates, all with a smile.

EMS-HW50C

SSP50 ($109.98 Amazon) does nothing to protect from common over and under voltage. And does nothing to protect from missing neutral wire which can cause 240-volts to damage everything that needs 120-volts. Progressive Industries must make this item to compete with power strips.

We all need some over / under protection. Over voltage can damage electronics.
Under voltage can damage motors, like roof air conditioners, like a very hot day when everyone in the campground is running their air conditioners.

For some reason I thought my 03 U320 had a electrical protection system installed during the build.

It does - a surge protector and an over/under voltage relay at Maverick the transfer switch.

ETA - photos in a couple of George Hatfield's posts in this thread Strange 110 volt electrical program

The EMS products cover a wider range of issues such as miswiring (these would potentially be displayed on your powerline monitor lights, but power would still be passed without the additional EMS)

Surge Guard portable 50 amp Model 34750 is on sale at PPL for $300.  The ad says it protects against low voltage too, but maybe this does not work as well as the installed versions.  just fyi in case someone interested at that price, and yet may not do the job you want

Why do Surge Guard for $300 when Progressive Industries portable does more for $327?

Someone just sent in their portable that was damage and Progressive Industries rebuilt it for no cost.
Of course if someone steals the portable, they will not replace it.
Portable also does not have an inside amps display.
Progressive Industries hard wired is $310

Hi Jerry,
I agree with Barry. I bought a used Progressive Industries portable 50amp unit from member John Lang. It gave itself when saving our coach from electrical disaster. It was used, and out of warranty. I sent it to Progressive to see if it was repairable. They sent a brand new unit. No charges of any kind. Wow.

When I first bought my U225 and got involved with this forum there was a thread similar to this (that also mentioned Tweety's). Seemed reasonable to me so I bought a portable Progressive Industries EMS 50 and have used it ever since. If I had to do it all over again I would buy the hard-wired unit but I'm happy with the portable. If someone steals it then I'll install the HW version.

I have been able to use the 50-A version on 30-A circuits with adapters, by the way.

They are not cheap but they do a lot of things to protect the coach. Highly recommended!

Thanks for all the comments.  I decided to buy the Progressive 50 amp unit with the remote display from rvupgrades.com.  Tweetys.com had the lower price and shipping, but also TX state sales tax, so slightly more than the $328 from rvupgrades.  Could have used it 5 years ago just after we bought the MH when my son plugged it into 240.  Only damage (most everything was off) was the PC board for the vacuum and a fuse in the inverter/charger.  Both items took a lot of time to fix though.  Not sure how the old tube TV's survived that as they did have remotes, but were off.

Later edit. Tweetys was $347, so $19 more.
