Basic TV upgrade

My wife and I took our 1999 U270 out for our maiden voyage this past weekend to see how much we did not know. Everything went well and no major problems. This was our first time to Rv and we both enjoyed it. The coach has the original old 19" and 13" tvs in it. I will someday update but for now just want to replace old vhs player with dvd player and get portable satilite dish to use with an extra Directv reciever I have. Surley that can not be that hard! Is it hard to get vhs player out and to hook up reciever?? Any basic info is appreciated. Thanks. Dick

To get at that VHS takes a #1 or #2 (I forget which one) square bit, take out all the little screws until the veneer that is around the VHS is loose and you can remove (may be in sections, not all one piece)

Once you have access to the VHS, removal and install will vary by coach, but not that big of a deal

to use your portable sat dish and receiver - easiest way is to put receiver under your switch in compartment above driver, wire runs as follows:

From portable antennae, a 50' coax should do. Â thinking backward - from the switch you go to the receiver with coax, and from the receiver I went down from that compartment above drives head, to compartment bay below driver with 50' coax - (you might want 75 or 100 - your choice, but more you have the hard it is to store/manage) that coax was coiled and left in that bay - when I wanted SAT, I would grab portable dish, get coax from under driver seat bay, tun to where there were no trees, set on ground, table, top of bus, etc. and go through set up routine.

When you get tired of that, buy a winegard traveler dish

Good luck, and welcome!!

Could you not use the outside cable connect and put the direct receiver between the tv and the inside connection??  just thinking.  DAN

Yes, signal loss might be an issue. Sat dish to cable connect, remove cable input from switch, put that coax to receiver, then add coax from receiver output to satellite input on switch.

When you want satellite, switchable for day will now work

Cable now disabled and dedicated to satellite, no big deal. Signal loss across connectors might be, but pretty easy to try

Use an S2 sized square bit. The panels are tedious to remove and replace. I think I still have pictures of my remodel on his site. It is also available in beam alarm.com.

The crank-up antenna won't crank up, so we went to Radio Shack for a replacement. He didn't have one, but did have another antenna that he thought might work. We tried just using the coax from the old antenna, but that didn't work, so we tried using the coax from the old satellite. That worked will, so that's what we're using. We're not all that interested in television, so over-the-air is just fine for us. Since our television set has several inputs, the antenna is going directly into the television, as is the dvd player, the Apple TV, and the Audit system. Yes, the print on the Audit is backwards, but the graphs still tell me all I need to know.

I took out the old equipment pretty early in our stewardship of this coach. The bedroom television was pretty easy to get out, just take off a trip piece, and then I worked the VCR out. The VCR opening will be turned into a drawer, and the TV opening will be a cabinet. The front TV space now houses four plastic drawers, the DVD player, and the Apple TV box. Some day we will go down to the remodel shop to get the cabinet work done.
