Disassemble Gast moa-v111-jh

Hi, I am trying to rebuild my vacuum pump, have had some luck getting it to spin, but not consistently, so time to pull it fully apart.

That said, does anyone know the trick/technique for pulling the main body apart? I am trying to avoid breaking it :)

This isn't an answer to your question but it's speculation on a possible substitute for the OEM vacuum pumps. Harbor Freight has vacuum pumps for about $150 that, it seems to me, would do the job pretty well. They are 120VAC units, of course, but with the inverters we have on most coaches that would not be much of an issue. Nor would power draw since they are really only needed while we're driving.

Am I well off-base with this idea or does it make sense?

Hey Craig, replacing it would be easy, a used Ford, or Bosch etc can be had for as little as $20, and take a little tinkering to mount and such, but am hoping to keep the high-quality stock unit...

There is one on ebay for $75 with no bids yet. Check it and the rest at: 12V vacuum pump | eBay

A lot of the others are high quality but they made too many for the usage and are surplus now.

A failure of your vacuum pump may be caused by a leak in the Ford AC/heater control slider on the dash. The pump should only run occasionally. More often than that indicates a leak and may overheat the pump. Other members have had the same problem. Do a search for previous posts on this topic.

Hi, I have the pu,p on my bench, and I can get it to spin some of the time. Just for the life of me cannot seem to get the motor case apart. I am sure that there is some sort of method that I am missing, like sticking a screwdriver into a hole and reverse twisting the case, but nothing seems to be working. I am sure that once I get it open, I will be able to emery, or otherwise clean parts...

That eBay is a possibility, thanks. Just hate to spend well over $100 (after shipping, taxes, brokerage fees, closer to $150), if I can fix it. They seem well built.

A mom and pop electrical shop in your town may be able to help for free.

Partial success. I was just able to prise the motor case apart, it appears to be a friction fit, with rotational lock tabs. I think it was super reluctant because of rust/corrosion on the shaft.


Now to play with the bushings.
