I've got a screw loose

Well, some would say that I've got quite a few loose, but that's another story. The one that's the problem today is from the door. It looks like it holds the inner and outer parts of the door lock/handle mechanism together. I just got back from the store, where they tried to figure out what diameter and thread it is, with no luck. It looks like it is a self-tapping screw about an inch long. I suspect that it is not original because it seems too short. Anyone know for sure what size it really is?

A piture would be nice but if it is one of the 2 that hold the door handle/opening of door plastic cover I used a #8 metal 3/4" long screw. If that does not hold use a #10. No big deal just get it to holdcover to inside mechanism.

Here are two pictures of the screw. It looks to me like it is a self-tapping one, and maybe a bit short. Looks like only a couple threads are grabbing. I'm wondering if maybe the original screw was replaced with whatever was handy rather than what was needed.

Thanks, John. I'll mention that tomorrow when I go into town, and see if that helps. We're going to also be going past a lumberyard, but I don't think they have much hardware there. Might have to wait until we can go down to Springfield.

As I said earlier just put whatever fits in it as all it does is hold the parts together.

Yes,

That's a flat head thread cutting machine screw.

I stopped at the lumber yard today and got a 10-24 screw 1" long. That seemed to be the closest to what I had, although mine was 3/4" long. That's about two or three threads too long. One of these days I'll dig up a 3/4" one and see if it will hold.
