Genset shutdown

Ok.  I had the steering box replaced replaced with a reman unit. In the process the generator had to be removed, etc. Here is the question. When we turned on genset for the first time, the genset ran for about 3-4 minutes and then shut down. Acted like it was hot. The service tech investigated the next day and said the radiator cap was loose. I am questioning if this is an accurate assessment?  He had replaced the fluids, etc. As long as the fan was running and the water was circulating, it seems like that would not make a difference. I wonder if lack of pressure  had something to do with it?  Any ideas?

Anyway, he ran for two hours after that and it ran as usual.

My GUESS they did not get all the air removed when they refilled,when it got hot enough to shut down the thermostat opened enough to let water to get to the thermostat. A thermostat that is not wet takes a high temp to open.
Am wondering why they had to remove the genset for steering R&R, that does seen strange, then mine was repaired, it did not require removing the genset.
Would recheck water level at radiator & overflow bottle, secure cap.

I'm with Dave. My generator was not removed when my steering box was replaced.

Also, you might check and see if the generator cooling fan switch is in the "OFF" position.  If so, the generator will shut itself off once it hits a certain temp.  This happened to us after we had our steering gear replaced.

I'm not too sure (but) your generator may have a low coolant sensor. 

If all it ran was a short period of time & your service tech DID add additional coolant, it's a good bet your low coolant sensor was doing its thing.  Your tech had things under control.. not to worry.  pc
