All that is needed is a tiny expansion tank to solve many of these issues. Even one the size of a coffee can would do.

Agreed.  And they can be installed anywhere in the cold water circuit too.  I put mine in a hard to reach corner under the kitchen sink on a long hose. To winterize I pull it out from there and position it so the inlet is on the bottom during the air purging process before adding antifreeze.  Accumulator tanks seem to be one of those things where some people like them- some don't, but it's always good to know your options.

Excellent discussion going here, especially as I consider the future replacement of my water pump.  Also found a interesting thread at another forum, dealing with the subject of thermal expansion in the RV water heater, and the benefits of a expansion tank:

That settles it. Going to replace the big blue tank with a smaller pvc built tube, like the 88. This will allow much better access in that bay. ^.^d

I never noticed the existing pump pulsating so I am wondering if there is an accumulator  tank somewhere?????  02 295 40 ft  Dan

Following advice from Neal today I ordered an Shurflo Accumulator tank 181-201 to go with the Shurflo 4048-153-E75 water pump. Will have to move things around to get this in there but hopefully will be worth the effort and expense.  I would like to do it right the first time.  After looking at the four holes to screw this pump down I do not think they will match the existing four holes of the existing Aquatec Pump anyway.  I assume the tank goes on the "out" side of the pump as the strainer is on the "in" side.  DAN

Dan, I installed the Shurflo 4048-153-E75 in my 03 U320 today.  Works very well, good pressure and quiet (after placing soft cloth where PEX was making contact with wall of compartment).  I am not noticing any pulsation even at low flow and no delay in coming on.  I will be interested in your results when the accumulator is installed.

Bill:  Did the screw holes match with the old unit screw holes or did you have to make new ones??

Screw holes all lined up ok.  Replaced pump was the 5.7 gpm model 5900.  The 4048 is Shurflos direct replacement for the 5900 so everything lined up great.

Finally got the new shurflo pump and accumulator tank installed.  Had to reroute the plumbing somewhat.  Tested it today and works great.  Seems so far to be quite.  All I like is attaching it to the storage bay floor (four screws) and the tank on the side wall (two screws).  You do not need the water to go through the tank, so I capped one side and used a tee to connect to the line after the pump.  Is it better than the old pump??  Time will tell and the only way to be better is to be quieter as the old pump had great volume also.  I am going to look for a repair kit for the old pump as the motor is good but must be something inside the pump area which will not allow cutoff or a constant noise even when not pumping water.  The best thing about the installation was the fact that I had very little fresh water in my tank, so only had to drain out about 12 gallons. I may put some foam around areas which might cause a noise from any excess vibration. Small area to work in and it is so hot in Texas right now so I waited until late afternoon and early morning.  Finally hooked up a fan.    DAN

We added a ball valve on water line to water pump and also another ball valve on line out of water pump. Makes changing a pump much easier.

After everything got quiet this morning I turned the pump on and it does have about the same noise level as the old pump.  Not as quiet as I thought.  Works very well.  You can turn the pump switch on and for about 5 to 10 seconds it will flow water without pump coming on.  I can only assume the accumulator tank is allowing this to happen.  Does have full continuous flow when turned on. It was not as easy to install mainly because of the heat index in Texas and it is only 93 during the day.  DAN
