Headed back to NAC--Campground recommendations?

Well, we've been having a ball learning as much as we can about our coach since our purchase at MOT in May. This has, not surprisingly, resulted in a long list of things we would like to add (ceiling fan in the bedroom) as well as a few items that need a little service attention (i.e., rear camera randomly won't display, with increasing frequency). We plan on hitting the road in September (the better half has been a little slow in pulling the retirement trigger) with a key stop at the Grandvention in October. So, I've decided to roll on back down to MOT and get everything taken care of prior to the September departure.

I'm leaving Virginia next Wednesday to spend a couple of days just south of Wilmington, N.C. with some relatives. Once I leave N.C., I plan on taking I-20 across to NAC. I'm giving myself three days to make leisurely ride over to NAC, doing 300-400 miles each day. Anyone have any recommendations along the I-20 corridor?

Also, let me know if anyone has items or info they want checked out at MOT or FOT.

FT has a service tech working at the Grandvention - you can get work done while you are there, - chargeable of course, but very convenient.

Good idea, but this is a pretty long list and some of it just won't wait. Plus, it's a road trip! <grin>

I usually just stay at the rest stops along the way. When you get to Nac you can stay at mot.  They gave a dump and water as well as 50 amp plugs.

OP is asking for suggestions enroute, not what the options are in Nac....

Don, Just a note on wife pulling the retirement trigger...I finally told mine to retire or check the mail box daily for postcards from really beautiful places. Got on the road in a week!

I'm with Larry.. Carol didn't want to retire so I told her I was heading south after the holidays, hope she would come.  She gave notice quickly... Don't believe she has any regrets..

Ah, Michelle so right....campgrounds along the way.  Look forward to hearing these as I could use that list on the reverse route, wanting to travel from Nac to such as Va and the Carolinas.

I wonder if one of my memberships plans such a trip, not just places to camp overnight but optional nice campgrounds and sights to see if stay at the sites for a couple of days each.  Group of us talking of such a trip next spring

Don, A travel tip ...  I85 Greenville thru N GA  is a bad trip.  From NC pick up I77 in Charlotte, to Columbia and pickup I20.  Go STRAIGHT thru ATL, not the bypass, no truck traffic inside the loop, then its clear sailing to TX and points west.

Ameristar RV Park right on I-20 in Vicksburg is great stopping off place.  $22.50 for full hook up.  Easy in and out.  DAN

If you need an overnight in or near Birmingham, we found a wonderful spot. A couple miles off the bypass, I 459, exit 10,  the Hoover RV Park. It is a HUGE paved parking lot with pull-through sites and full H-U, 50A and cable and wi-fi. Payment is honor system, just drive in, park, hook-up, put money in envelope or pay by credit card online. Its a special park for the sports complex nearby but filled only on occasion of the infrequent events held there. Very convenient when traversing Birmingham on I 20, I 59 or even I 65.
No RV! Have hung up the keys.

Wow! Finally got a chance to check back on the forum tonight. Great responses!

John, I'm just hoping I can find a 50 amp hookup at MOT. Jill said they are really swamped right now.

Jeff and Larry, thanks for the retirement trigger suggestions. I'll feel free to contact either of you for housing, versus campground, suggestions for me when this backfires!

Thanks for the suggestion on Atlanta, Gary. I would have just plowed on around the bypass.

Just curious, why is I85 a bad trip in Nth Georgia? Construction? Traffic? Bad road?

Gary, is any particular time of day (or night) better to traverse through Atlanta. I realize that rush hour would probably not be good, but off hours???????

Bill and Larry, Volume of traffic on I85 is way over capacity and it seems like every day there is a traffic stopping incident. I85 in most ares is two lanes each direction and its way past time to update it.  In ares where road has been UPDATED one favorite trick is to narrow travel lanes to 11 feet, not much margin for error, take out TOLL commuter lanes and you have ever building congestion.
Rush hour in ATL extends from 7 am to 10 am most days in the morning, after 3 pm til ? evenings and add in Friday evening traffic and it can get horrendous. 
The bypass or loop , I285 is always busy with truck traffic, in my opinion if you feel like you have to use the loop the top end is the worst, all the I75 and I85 traffic from the sounth converges in Marietta and it can be bad.  On the south end at least there is I675 that relieves some of the south bound 75 traffic.
In the inside of the loop  I285 truck traffic is restricted so at least for a few miles that part of the problem is lessened.
Who the Engineer is that brought three interstate highways together in downtown ATL is is unknown, but he ( she ) should be beaten broadly about the back and shoulders with a traffic cone.

The Atlanta population explosion outstripped the interstate capacity. Nobody expected or predicted that rapid population growth. I know what the traffic was like there in the 90's can't imagine what it is like today.
