Oh my. Shower drain has crack which lets water leak onto floor

Couldn't find anything in search for this problem  Seems we have a long crack in our shower drain. Of course, very little room to work on getting to the drain and a lot of difficult angles.  At this point looks like we will have to remove the shower and the shower pan. Not an easy job. Anyone with ideas?  Crack is long.

Waiting from a call back from James T. but tought I would get a start.

AS always, thanks so very much for ideas.

PS  Have decided to drill another access hole forward of the p trap and see if that gives me the room I need to replace section of pipe. Worse case, end up taking out the shower.. As those who know me, I can be dangerous when given a tool. Wife usually cries when I pick up a screw driver.

Jeff, Sorry to hear about the issue, just a note, I had  a fiberglass ? Bath tub many yrs ago that leaked, thought bad fitting on drain, nope, the bottom had a crack, required new assy.
Either way it s fixable.

Are you sure the pipe has a leak. I had what I thought was the same problem and it turned out to be a simple matter of removing and then caulking around the drain. No problems since.

Jeff, sure hoping it's the drain and not the pipe. Like Dave said, either way is fixable. One ways just harder than another. Good luck!

I had to recaulk the drain too.  I could reach the drain if I pulled off the black cover behind the water pump. It was a reach.

Jeff & Carol,

Not sure, from your description where your crack is. If it is in a drain pipe, maybe our fix will be of help. If it is on your shower floor, not sure what to do.

We have spread a layer of silicone way inside our shower drain to seal the pipe joints up to the top of the drain.

FYI, we have also had two major drain pipe leaks, one under toilet and one in a very hard to reach location under a sink. Both had cracks.

We reached in with denatured alcohol soaked rag to clean cracked area. And then put globs of silicone (GE clear silicone II) on my fingers and reached in to spread silicone over crack. We could not see the crack very well, but with repeated layers of silicone, we permanently fixed our leaks. Repair was done many years ago and we have had no re-occurring leaks.

As an alternative to removing shower, depending where your shower is located in your floor-plan, you could consider cutting a hole from under your coach to reach the drain pipe elbow. Sort of comparing damage to shower to damage to floor, both of which can be repaired and sealed.

We always use denatured alcohol to prepare surfaces for silicone.

For these kinds of repairs, I would suggest using acetone for a cleaner.  Other cleaners may get the job done sometimes, but I have found that acetone has worked well for me every time.  Take care and have a great day  ----  Fritz

Fortunately, we got a good repair guy for the issue.  Jeff is recovering from a muscle spasm in his shoulder/neck that had him in the ER (Yay! Morphine!) and I cannot get on my knees after having them replaced in April ... so any inclination to tackle a repair was blessedly out of the question.  The crack looks very much like it started as a result of freezing ... had to be the previous owner, because we were full time with heat on or in mild weather since owning the coach ... but with time and vibration it opened up to disaster proportions.  It was very near a 20degree bend in a location that was impossible to reach through the access in the wheel well OR under the shower.  If the vent stack behind the toilet had been farther forward rather than to the rear, there might have been room to attack from that angle.  We decided to try the "Hail, Mary!" approach and cut another access hole from under the coach before choosing to remove the shower pan and all the Corian surrounds.  Thankfully, it worked.  The repair guy had a camera system, and we could see precisely where and what was leaking.  We are now good to go ... his patch on the new access hole is just the same sort of thing that Foretravel does on the existing one, but we can have it checked when we are in Nac in Nov.  Glad to run into a good repair guy ... Anacortes RV Repair!!  He has worked on Foretravels and likes them ...

@Carol & Jeff Great news saves me the trouble of writing down all of the fabulous ideas I had. My ideas mostly involved dynamite and or large sums of cash.
