Re: Was: Air won't build... Now: Air Dryer fitment

Changed the subject line since we are not currently stuck by the roadside, and the questions, observations, and potential solutions evolve as I go. The plan is to find a rebuilt dryer in Edmonton which is or next major city. There is also the possibility of having ours rebuilt there in a day, which at least insure that it will fit our application or finding the rebuild kits to do it myself which would be fine by me. One troubling thing about purchasing a rebuilt unit is that I am frequently seeing the disclaimer on rebuilt DA33100x Pure Air Plus dryers that states;
"Special Notes
This air dryer is NOT compatible with Cummins Holset compressors".
I am including a screen shot of the one of the web pages where this appears. If this is so, why? My WA guess is that Foretravel added that brass manifold that contains an extra airline connection on the input port to add the line the goes to the wet tank. Anybody have any insight on this Holset compatibility issue?

Don't know if it helps you, Don, but I do have that Haldex isolation valve mounted on my AD-9.  I wondered what it was for...  The small silver flare connection is where the continuation of the "control" line from D-2 connects (after the "T" fitting in control port).  The brass compression type fitting has a nylon hose connected that goes to wet tank.

Thanks John, that is a very informative link! Studying it now... But it looks like what I was describing as a brass fitting is an isolation valve and is what makes the DA3300 work with the Holset compressor. So later 99' build numbers and later years like yours have the Wabco air compressor according to the article. It seems that any rebuilt DA33100x should work with the isolation valve off of the old one. I may yet keep the old one and eat the core charge, get the rebuild kits to refurbish my old one just to have a spare and a better understanding of the air supply system on our coach.

 Don, in all honesty I do not see the reason to keep a spare as once you rebuild it and keep up to date with this procedure you will never need to use spare. It will take up space and waste money I think.
There are way more important things to have as spares onboard than the Dryer. In 9 yrs of Foretravelling I have never had an on road problem because I service it every 18-24 months, regardless.
Having seen Barry B's problem of removing the dessicant out of air system proved to me this is a prudent move to keep on top of it.

Status Update and more bypass info;
The DA33100x seems to be a rare bird up here in Alberta... So far I have been quoted 7-10 business days to order one through several different heavy truck parts vendors (Traction, Fleet Brake, Freightliner etc.). Nor have I found the rebuild kits in stock (DQ6026 & DQ6020). I don't want to have to replumb the system to fit a more common unit, so I may have to do that. The other possibility is a guy who can rebuild my unit in a day. That would be fine, but if he can get the parts then I should be able to as well... Since we will be here in Edmonton for three weeks, I will probably just order it. We made it here without further incident (pressure stayed between 110 and 120 psi all the way here) after my bypass refinements. I have some info to add to that thread, but no time for a lot of detail at the moment. Suffice it to say that in addition to plugging the governor unloader to air dryer connection (done with a pipe thread plug taken from the old governor), it was necessary to plug the ΒΌ" plastic brake line that goes to the wet tank, otherwise air wouldn't build over 95psi as it was coming from the wet tank connection and dumping out of the air dryer inlet port elbow. This might depend on the position of the isolation valve piston... Anyway, functions fine now, but concerned about driving this way because of the water and contaminant build ups. Emptying the tank drains after driving a 100 miles or so is a real eye opener as regards the effectiveness of the air treatment system on our coaches!

Chuck, that is basically the same set up as the isolation valve on ours... I needed to plug the wet tank line (as well as the governor unloader) to build pressure beyond 95psi with the bypass in place.

Has the idea of MOT sending the kit, they had the kit when I had them rebuild it.

OK, that is good to know!  I saw that line coming from the wet tank, but I didn't really understand the purpose of the "isolation valve".  I should have realized that line would leak!  Everyone needs to add this additional step to their "How To Bypass The Air Dryer" instruction sheet.  Since that is a different type of fitting, it will require another type of plug.  I am really starting to see the wisdom of doing a rehearsal of this procedure...it gives you the chance to accumulate all the necessary parts BEFORE you actually need them.

I can see a run to the hardware store in my future!

 those parts may only be relevant for up to 2k models as ours just has the governor line and no isolation block
