finding local tv channels on batwing antenna

When one is traveling in new areas, is there a easy way of obtaining the network channel numbers when using your batwing antenna?

We use an app on my Droid called:  TV Antenna Helper - Free.  Seems to work pretty good.

This web site gives you direction and distance to broadcast locations based on your local zip code.  GPS coordinates don't always work.

Dave M has it right for most newer television sets. If your set has a MENU button, see if there is a SETUP function. Let it scan for available channels.

Our television sits on the pull-out tray between the seats when we're parked, and sleeps on our bed when traveling, so we do the setup whenever we first set up the set. Interesting that when we get back home we sometimes gain or lose channels.

I gave up on the batwing and installed the Jack. Even with the "HD" conversion the batwing never managed to pull in anything. I had better luck with an 8" wire stuck into the antenna connector; seriously!

But I also discovered that having the Wineguard amplifier on makes a big difference in being able to locate and watch OTA television with the new HD digital channels.

The "channel search" won't work well if the antenna is not pointed in the general direction of the transmitter(s). Finding that direction can be confusing. We've managed to find one station, then turn the antenna for maximum signal and then search again; that will often come up with new channels.

So to Dave M, and Davids points the newer tvs search and some of the smart tvs after about 30min you will have the "guide" function loaded automatically.  Not as extensive as cable but show, time and very brief description.

OK, so most digital TVs have scan functions.  All of mine do. They find the stations so your clicker works.  My suggestion helps you figure out where to aim your antenna, especially important when you are farther away and then actually show you what is going to be on and when. 

Our collection of movies and favorite TV shows on blu-ray, dvd and hard drive gives up plenty to watch when we want to.  When we are away, everything we want to watch gets recorded anyway.

Virtually all broadcast television signals in the U.S. are digital, and I believe all digital televisions need to "Scan" in order to find the available stations.
