I gave up on the batwing and installed the Jack. Even with the "HD" conversion the batwing never managed to pull in anything. I had better luck with an 8" wire stuck into the antenna connector; seriously!
But I also discovered that having the Wineguard amplifier on makes a big difference in being able to locate and watch OTA television with the new HD digital channels.
The "channel search" won't work well if the antenna is not pointed in the general direction of the transmitter(s). Finding that direction can be confusing. We've managed to find one station, then turn the antenna for maximum signal and then search again; that will often come up with new channels.
