Air filter

What air filter do you use? I crossed the Donaldson number P14-8043 over to Wic 46876 but it has no gasket on the closed end or the small hole for the filter restriction gauge to pick up the internal pressure. The Donaldson filters are hard to find around here

Bruce,
I use the Fleetguard AF1838 which is the Donaldson P148043,, get them from Filter Barn, easy,  Cummins does not stock that number, my price is about $10 less than Filter Barn, who is about half of other options.
Normal, we buy many filters from Filter Barn due to shipping, when I go to Cummins, stock up as lower cost, but having them shipped makes Filter Barn attractive.

Yes on both the large robber seal ring for the large cover and the hole on small end for the gauge reading.

 Bruce, I ordered recently a new one as my other was 4 yrs old and still just a light coating of dust but I thought it time anyway. I ordered the Donaldson and found they sent the Wix (which I do not like this make) and found as you the rubber seal not on small end. It did have the hole so I just used a nice sharp blade and cut it off old one and glued to new one. Now all is ok but next time I need one I am going to get the one Dave is talking about in 2018 !! ^.^d

I've had very good service from these guys. Original Donaldson parts with all the end gaskets.

For my Caterpillar engine;
Donaldson P148043

Purchased from;
Filter Products - equipment parts - Donaldson, Baldwin, Des-Case, Wilson,

Just do a search for that part number.

Rick, Is that price the delivered price or is delivery added ?  Point is, IF  delivery is included, that is a great price, IF NOT, Filter Barn is the winner for us as we always order way over the $100 area and get the FREE delivery.  Has worked well for me.

I was in lower CA at the time and shipping was around $12.00

Much better price at Filter Barn if you order a minimum of $100.00, that is easy with the Lube, Fuel filters for everything, including the generator & air filters.
As mentioned, we use many filters, Filter Barn is better price than Cummins IF  I have to order by phone, IF going to Cummins (No shipping) is better. No issues YET from Filter Barn, I spec Fleetguard ONLY, they want to sub Fram cross numbers, no dice.
Being a Cummins Dealer, we get a good price, but the UPS $$$ kills it.

The air filter saga continues, if you cross the F/G # AF1838 to Baldwin it crosses to PA3951 which is a reverse flow (inside out) 29"OAL same if you cross it to Wix 42610. That would hold true with the position of the filter restriction port in the cover, and the rubber gasket and small hole in the closed end of the filter. But the air flow is from the outside in. Baldwin engineering said their filter should be ok. Now if you cross the Donaldson # P14-8043 (p148043) you get a whole other Baldwin# PA2660 (28 1/2 OAL) correct air flow from outside in but no gasket or small hole for the restriction port on the closed end. I know some folks know way more than I about filtration, any thoughts?

I'm using a fancy blue Donaldson EAF5024.  I'll probably never get the longevity benefits out of it that an over truck would see but I wanted to see how it would hold up.  It crosses over to a Fleetguard AF954M.

They can be a tad expensive compared to the original air filters.

I got tired of the problems and costs of replacing the original air filter element and built a pre-filter for my 91 GV.  I just leave the original in place and it serves as a back-up if the pre-filter gives way for some reason.  So far all is working well and all I need to do is remove the pre-filter material, shake it out/wash and dry and re-install.  Pre-filter mat'l is cheap and easy to work with.  I posted a picture of it several months ago, but if some one wants more details, send me a PM.  Have a great day  ----  Fritz
