Koni Shock deal

We've been looking to replace our 16 yr old shocks absorbers and found this seemingly good deal from Race-Mart.com.  $159.44 ea with no shipping or handling charges....$1275.52 total.  For those members in the market.

the redtops Koni's are adjustable and rebuildable.

All mine were at the first setting.  Try three or four out of five.  Each 1/2 turn compensates for 25k miles of use.

At the fourth adjustment mine were noticeably firm.  After 3,500 miles it softened a bit.

They are supposed to be adjusted after installation for the desired ride.

I am sure the FSD shock are better but I adjusted the current shocks first.

We and many others prefer Koni FSD (non adjustable) shocks.

Perhaps a better description of the FSD's is "self-adjusting", since they offer different dampening depending on frequency of motion.

Brett, you think the FSDs are worth changing to them even if you know of no trouble with current shocks, 150k miles?

If I'm understanding this correctly, the choices for a 1998 U320 are:

1. Invest around $200 for labor to have all 8 shocks removed and adjusted to setting #4 given the mileage on our coach (75,000 miles) and revisit this same issue within another 50,000 miles?

or

2. Bite the bullet now with upgraded nonadjustable FSDs for approximately $1500 incl labor which will last as long as we own the coach?

Mike,

FSD's are better than the OE shocks-- better design.  So they would be better, clearly than your 150k mile shocks.  See also description below.

Bill,

Choices would be valid IF (the BIG IF) the end result was the same shock dampening.  It is not.  The FSD's are BOTH softer (over small bumps/high frequency) and stiffer (over big bumps/low frequency).

So the FSD's give both better ride and better handling.

As to how much that is worth-- that is a personal and somewhat subjective issue and may even depend on the quality of the road surfaces where you drive.

Mike

We changed to FSDs with 40K miles on our coach. The ride is better. How much better is hard to quantify? The bottom line is like Brett said, personal and subjective. We would do it again.

RE: you think the FSDs are worth changing to them even if you know of no trouble with current shocks, 150k miles

We changed our original shocks for FSD about 6 years ago, even though the old shocks seemed fine. If a shock does not leak, it is hard to know how much they are worn.

When we drove out of MOT with our new FSD, we immediately felt the difference on the first turn and were happy we made the change. But within about an hour of driving on the new FSD we now longer could remember how the old shocks felt, and we no longer had a way to compare as we got used to our "new" ride.

You all swayed me.  Bought a set.  I build off road motorcycles and understand the technology very well.  Off the superslab is the difference which is mostly our intended use.

Will give a report later

An even better deal - $155 with free shipping, no tax (except Wa residents).

Koni 8805-1010

Those are the front and drive axle shocks.  Don't see 8805-1011 (the tag axle shocks) on that site.

Steve,

I checked Jeg's website and could not find anything that said it was a pair. Even added it to my cart, and it still said quantity one. What am I overlooking?

I buy a lot from Jeg's.

I called and asked why there price seemed out of line with every one else.

They said the shocks come packed as a pair and they sell them as a pair.

I told them that once they make it clear on their site that the price is for a pair they will probably sell some.
My order is at my shop now, when I go to work tomorrow I will confirm that ordering 2 units gave me four shocks.

As mine is one of the rare IFS units there are only two shocks in the front and they are a different #.

An eBay seller still has the 8805-1011 Koni tag shocks available for $40.99 per pair. They are NOS. I bought a pair. They are just like new.

When I was price checking, I went to the Jeg's site and saw their price was way out of line, so just skipped them.  Never thought about it being a price for two.

Qty of 2 does get you 4 shocks.

Kinda reminds me...once I found grease zerk caps, in packages of 25ea. Asked my wife to order me 25. Do you have any idea how long it takes to go thru 625 zerk caps ?

Good to know you ended up with the correct number of shocks .

I see no one really did an update on this topic since its conception.. I know its 4yrs old but I am going to bump it and keep it going as its would be the same topic.

I ordered my 8 shocks from Koni 8805-1010 - Foretravel Front & Rear / Safari Magnum Leaf Spring Front /... right after Thanksgiving..

When we made it back from our Puerto Penasco trip, they were sitting and waiting for me.

I (my helper more) started on the fronts and we were able to get them off without to much issue. I bought the Earthquake battery impact 1/2" drive and it worked pretty good in the space provided by Foretravel. Took about 3hrs to get the fronts off and replaced.

I talked to my helper about the last guy was able to get them changed out and in 8hrs and he said no we will be done before then.. I said no , it took them 8 hrs... he says... The front were easy and the backs look easier!! NEGATIVE!!  The back was real tight and a bear to get in.. The Impact did not fit as it was tooooo TIGHT!!! so I went to Harbor freight and picked up a Air impact that worked up to 750 foot pounds of torque..

It was a slow tedious project on the rears.. I told him I would just take it down and have them changed and make it easier on us(mostly him lol) and he refused.. he wanted to WIN THE BATTLE! HE eventually did. 8 total hours later we finished.. it was a battle to say the least.

The old ones we removed were still good after 222k miles. 1 had a leak but all in all they were all still good. 1 option would have been to adjust them all the way up to keep using the originals but if it was me... You are in there, remove and replace. Not worth the savings at this time.

Now on to the good stuff

Ride quality has improved (I assumed it would)
bouncing over the bumps.. a bounce up and then it would stop.. very tight..

Overall worth the money but the most and best improvement is in the body roll and movement.

The wind was blowing and it did not phase me.. yes I felt it... It used to blow me in another lane.. now it was awesomely manageable. When being passed or passing the Semi trucks I didnt feel the push from the wind

All in all I am so happy i cant hardly stand it.. they work most effective.  The front to back and side to side is super tight and the added benefit when we are parked I dont get the bounce and movement as much from anyone in the Coach..

Loving it

I wasted my money having the red tops adjusted twice.  No substitute for the FSD's

I replaced the shocks on my Safari/Magnum (leaf springs) a few years ago and had to use a breaker bar to loosen up some of the nuts.  The bar was also useful in some tight spaces where the impact would not fit.  The difference was remarkable, but I also replaced the suspension and steering bushings at the same time, so could not distinguish which made the most difference.  I'm inclined to go with new shocks for the simple reason that mine will soon be 20 years old.  Once done, I don't want to have to deal with it again.
