Fresh water pump relay

The fresh water pump relay in our 91 GV is no longer available.  We've been burning out relays rather quickly so I called FT parts and asked if they had these relays.  They have quit using that relay and are using a different one in the newer models.  ( I didn't ask what "newer" was )  They have a newer relay that can be used in older models like ours, but needs to be re-wired to work.  They are sending me the new relay and instructions on how to re-wire it.  The relays from NAPA, etc. just wont work they said.  If any one has this problem, call FT parts.  Thanks and have a great day  ----  Fritz

It is a VW bug headlight latching relay. OEM German or Chinese aftermarket available ebay. Some variants may have to be mounted so the lugs stick out rather than down. A little work may be needed to fasten it down securely on some. Also used on other VW models. Has to be latching. See my earlier posts for part numbers.

OEM part number: 111-941-583  Here is the ebay listing. relay 111-941-583 | eBay Lots of styles and prices but all work the same. The metal ones with the tab on the top are easiest to mount.

Did you upgrade your pump lately?
When I replaced my water pump some time ago the installation instructions warned about pulling more current than older generation units and that some toggle relays (i.e. the VW type) can't handle the extra current.  The instructions advised to use a second 30 amp "auto" relay to actually power the pump.  So the old toggle relay only powers the coil to the added 30 amp auto relay.  A new larger capacity toggle relay from FT should do the trick too.  Let us know how it works out.

Using OEM pump. Relay has been working well. Headlights draw quite a bit of juice. I replaced mine with an exact German model. The  original had loose connectors that overheated. Wonder if The low cost Chinese c!ones are the problem? I have a large Jabsco pump so might use your idea of a second relay or use a second VW relay in parallel if I ever use the Jabsco.

John  ----  I did replace my water pump and things worked fine for a while as you know, but the system wouldn't hold a relay.  I don't remember getting any instructions with the new pump talking about upgrading the relay.  When I talked to FT parts, they said that none of the other kinds would work (I specifically asked about the VW relay).  There are other
ways I'm sure, but I will follow FT suggestion at this point and I will post the results of the re-wiring situation.

I think OEM Foretravel relay is the VW. Ours was original and was the German VW.

The VW relay is a common replacement but I'm betting FT will send you a Finder latching relay like the one in this photo. I got one from them a couple of years ago and they included a little note with simple wiring instructions (burned out my original after installing a water pump that drew more current). You can also get this relay on line from many sources. Finder Latching Relay: 20.21.9.012

Do the sources mentioned give you a re-wiring dia. ??  If you're just getting a relay, they'd be OK I suspect, but on these older coaches there is a modification to be made, so I'm thinking that FT has to be the source.  Thanks and have a great day  ----  Fritz

  Here's the schematic with the wiring for the Finder noted in the top right. It's really just a jumper. Probably cheaper online.

Installed the new fresh water pump relay and all is a go at this point in time.  I'll consider that I can cross that problem off my "open items" list.

Jor  ----  Your sketch was a big help.  The FT schematic that came with the relay showed one wire that was white and I didn't have a white one.  It turned out to be green which was the one you showed as the one being from the "S" terminal of the old relay.  It was the only one left, but green is normally GRND and I was skeptical.  Thanks again  ----  Fritz

That is the same place I bought my Finder Relay. I changed it out with the same wiring.

I didn't have to change any wiring either.  In fact, I used some spade lugs and connected them into the relay and all I had to do was to plug in the existing wiring to the relay.  That worked out well since the relay on our 91 GV is under the couch so I didn't have to work under there making up wiring.  Thanks for the info and have a great day  ----  Fritz
