What is this? (white plastic object on entry door frame)

What is this on the front door frame?  Thanks in advance.

The contact switch that controls the step position.

On my 1990 U280 it is used as a sensor for the on board alarm system located in the drivers foot well.

On your 1997 unit, this is most likely the sensor for the step retractor.
