Goodyear Tire Experience?

I need to replace the tires on my 1997 U300 Foretravel. The Michelins are 7 years old.

I have looked at the Michelin Advantage program, then talked to my local Goodyear dealer. The price quoted is less than the price of the Michelins, mostly because the quoted price includes mounting, balancing, new inflation stems, etc. and unlike the Advantage plan will not require a trip to Kingsport for installation.

If you have had experience with Goodyear G670 RV radial tires, please advise of your experience with those tires.

I Replaced six moderately checked 4-year old Michelins on our '98 U320 with G670's shortly after we purchased the coach, in 2007. I am replacing the two steer-tires before we travel this summer, based solely based upon age; no cracking, checking or wear issues, (42k miles) of any kind. We have experienced nothing but excellent experience with those tires on our coach. I've read stories about "cupping" and balance issues wit Goodyear, but we have experienced none of these. I have also done only one front-end alignment in that period, thou I will do an alignment when we install new steer-tires. For what it's worth, I'm looking for a "deal" (did you find one?), and when I find one I plan to replace (at-least) the steer tires with "same" this Spring.

Thanks for your response. It is encouraging! No, I did NOT find a deal. I got a quote from a local dealer and am satisfied with his offer. It is a complete package and includes all the things one must pay extra for to the installing dealer using the Advantage program.

Yes, Duane. When I found the long crack in my right front up in PA last last year, I replaced both steer tires with G670's. I found them very satisfactory, drove them, maybe a thousand miles then, I switched them to my tag when replacing the other 6 tires became necessary. They travel there now, still with no real problems. I am surprised that you can get a better deal on them than the Michelin Advantage price, though. I thought that the folks in PA gave me a big discount but the bill was still a couple hundred more than I paid on the Michelin plan.  Make sure that you get NEW tires.

Yeah - good thinking. Jerry told me the tires would be less than 6 months old, which I guess is OK. I do not know if the 7-year warranty starts with the installation date or when.

Did you install new Michelins for the rest of the coach, and if so, why?

I don't have much to offer, but our coach came to us with a set of the predecessor to the G670, in the non-RV truck version.. They were in *perfect* condition. Not the slightest hint of sidewall crack, oxidation, delam, vibration, nothing. Perfect in every way. Except the build date code, which said they were 12  years old. I really, really hated throwing them away. I'd have replaced them with the G670 if I hadn't found the great deal on the current set. When they age out, I'll look for Goodyears again.

Duane:

Our first set of replacement tires were Goodyear G670s mounted in 2005. Both front tires made contact with the front airbag frames.  After 7 years, at FOT's recommendation they were replaced with Michelins.

I have the G670's on my 96' U320, no issues.  In fact, they are several years old and look like new.

I understand what you mean about old tires looking fine--- when I bought our U280 it had a set of Michelin Pilots on it.  They looked great, no checking or anything.  I drove the coach home 300 miles at a high rate of speed only to discover later that they were original to the coach and 20 years old!
I still have one mounted on a spare rim, and it still looks great ( but I wouldn't use it), one 25 years old.

Think you are getting a good deal. How are you going to balance them?

On the 06 Phenix I bought new , it came with Goodyear tires . Looked good , rode and handled good . The problem was  they (would not)  stay round . At about ,10,000 miles , I had to have then trued . They were balanced each time and still , every time would develop a high spot on all the tires , and back to the tire shop to get trued again .  Foretravel used them for a while as they got a deal on bulk . Had lot's of complaints , sold the remainder to a trucking company .      Brad Metzger
