Time maybe for a new bed

Looking for a new bed.  Is this a standard Queen??  Sam's has a $75.00 off on Serta Perfect Sleeper Valleybrook Queen Mattress.
Going to see it this afternoon.  My coach has the original 02 I think.  It is OK but maybe time for a new one.  Also would love to change the jackbed for a fold out sleeper.  I have the room. Any ideas?? :-\  DAN

Hi Dan,

We got a memory foam mattress from Costco. Comes in a box, 75 lbs. open it up in place and it takes a day or so to resurect itself.  We have a TempurPedic at home so this was not a big change for us as they can be for some.  Some complain about outgassing.  There is a bit at first for a day or two but not much.  It doesn't seem to sleep warmer than our one at home or the original mattress that was in the coach.  $499 on sale now.  Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back forever.  It is thick but it works fine.  We use a fitted sheet and a light quilt or banket in a duvet cover.  Never get tankled up in anything that way.  Very good sleep for us.

If it's the original mattress, "almost".  Width and length are likely queen, the corners at the foot of the bed are likely to be more rounded (at least they were in our original one).

We replaced ours with an Aerus memory foam mattress a couple of years ago.  At the time, Aerus/Foamex was one of the few memory foam mattresses whose foam is made in the USA.  I don't know if that's still the case, but I will say the mattress had none of that "chemical" smell when first unboxed that you sometimes encounter with memory foam.  We bought a standard queen size.  The standard corners mean a little less walking room but it's not been a problem.

Roger,

Is that one pretty close to your Tempur?? We have gone back and forth on a new mattress(need one) because we love our Tempur at home but didn't really wanna shell out the $$ for one on the road.

What a great topic. I too am about to replace my mattress and do not know where to start. There are so many types. I am looking for a firm mattress also. Looking forward to see the responses to your post.

I went a foam shop an bought a 4 inch foam Queen and a 2 inch memory foam and and they put them together with a mattress
cover. I like a soft bed so I asked to try out their softest mattress and they had 2 different memory 2 inch memory foam mattresses
to try. I am really pleased with what I got. It is quite a bit lighter than my old mattress and way more comfortable.

Jeff and Kathy,

Our TempurPedic at home is a "firm" one, what ever that means.  Like all of these, they soften up as they warm up.  When you first get in they are pretty solid and you ease into the groove.  By morning the whole thing is more uniformly firm. If younhave a TempurPedic you know what I mean.  I called the company that makes the Costco mattress and asked how to compare them.  The person told me that most people find these a bit softer than the Firm TempurPedic.  I think I would agree.  It has a softer feel when you get in.  We have a normal fiberfilled mattress pad/protector which is not very thick so I attribute most of it to the top layer on the mattress.  It has good support, it feels a bit different from the TempurPedic. It seems to have a more uniform feel across the bed right off the bat.  Proof is in the sleeping which we have no problem doing for 9 or 10 hours sometimes.  We are out for 4 months right now, if we didn't like it we would know.

Every one likes something different. Costco's moneyback satisfaction at any time works for us.  Anywhere in the county. Most places give you 90 days to like it or return it for something else, not get your money back.

Roger

We weren't sure but for $499 we went for it.  I don't think we would have found anything better for that price.

If you're heavier weight or in general just run hot, stay away from the memory foam.  At least the latex memory foam.  We got one of those bed in a bag beds and it has been miserable for me since day one.  I heat up so hot in that bed but my wife loves it.  Comfort is good, it's just too hot.  I miss my Simmons beautyrest pillowtop from our S&B home.

Just got back from Sam's and guess what until the 29th $75 off so a queen like I decribed earlier is only $324.00 with 12 inch overall depth.  The 13 inch depth is $519.00 both pillow top.  Made in USA.  Will look at this carefully.  DAN :o

Dan,

Jean and I got that (non-pillow top) version last Fall and really like it.

But, 12 inches on top of that platform is a serious height. I do not have a problem, but Jean needs a step to climb into bed.

Hope this helps,

FWIW,
My original mattress is in pretty good shape (I don't see any deformations, sags, etc).  I did add a 3 or 4 inch memory foam mattress pad and am just plain tickled with it.  It sleeps very well now.  So..., won't be getting a mattress anytime soon. Just my 2 cents.

We're on our third memory foam mattress, none of them Tempur, and I wouldn't be without one. They have been very important to my recovery from two back surgeries. I haven't had any problems with "Sleeping Hot" but many of the newer memory foam mattresses have a gel topper to make them cooler.  Costs have been between $400 and $600.

They are heavy but worth it.

piku,  If you sleep hot, try the fitted bottom sheet, no top sheet and a light blanket in a light sheet weight duvet cover.  It makes sticking out the cooling fins (feet) easier and you won't get quite as wrapped up in the covers.  Works for us.

Worth a try for comfort.

We JUST bought a new foam mattress "Columbus" from Ameri-Sleep online, sight unseen  :o The reviews were great and so we went for it. We were concerned, but after sleeping on it for a whole weekend now, we love it!! I do sleep hot, and have had issues with foam before (we had the one from Costco in our home and I sweated buckets every night!), but this one is not hot and doesn't seem to melt underneath you. It's eco-foam and there was no offensive odor. There seem to always be specials (we only paid $649 for our Full sized), so while not as inexpensive as the Costco model it's doable.

Dan, the 12" or 13" foam mattress will NOT be that depth of memory foam.  There are multiple variables:  thickness of base layer vs top (memory) layer; density (wt per cu ft) of base layer; density of top layer; overall weight; air channels or not; etc.

When I was shopping for mine, several years ago, I spent an awful lot of time online studying and comparing.
By "mine" I mean for a residential application, actually to replace split water bed mattresses of a California King platform bed.
Off the top of my head, I do not remember all the specs of the one I selected.  It was an import, sold by Amazon $499, shipped FREE from importer in CA.  I do remember that it was 99 or 100 pounds shipping weight.  It came compressed in poly film, inside a corrugated carton.  The poly had to be cut carefully whereupon the mattress grew to the proper size over several hours.  I let it off-gas for a couple days before putting pad on top and linens.

Mine does not have air channels.  Mine might be overkill because I have a memory foam topper on top of the memory foam mattress. The former had been used upon the water bed mattresses (bladders).  I didn't even need to use the heaters with the high density topper on the water bed.  HOWEVER, body heat is retained, not dispersed on mine.  I dare say body heat becomes 'concentrated', not merely retained.
As Roger noted, the mattress does not conform to ones shape immediately, unless it is low density foam.  So, if you get a chance to test one or more, be patient.  The way it feels after ten minutes is NOT going to be the way it felt at first.  I say 'ten minutes' when, in fact, ambient temperature and the thickness of clothing can make a big difference.

I have to agree on the time it takes to sink into a high density memory foam. My favorite of our memory foam mattresses feels like laying down on cardboard in cool weather. However, within a short time your body melts into the mattress but it still supports your body evenly. Keep in mind the heavier you are the higher density you need. I'm pushing 240 so a 5 or 6 lb density is right for me.

If you go into a store that sells TempurPedic mattresses you will almost always find the sample beds under a few higher wattege spot lights.  These actually will warm the surface of the bed up a bit and make it feel more like it will feel after you have been in it for a few hours.  An electric blanket on med-low will do the same.  At -10° when we left MN in January our bed was closer to a brick than cardboard.  A day of driving with the heat on and we slept very well.

Roger I survive now by sleeping under just a sheet unless it is under 60 degrees or so.  With that I am comfortable well into the higher 70's at night.

A BR ceiling fan really makes a big difference.  42", 5 blade, move air up in the middle, down the sides.  Better comfort all year long.

We have the ceiling fan in the bedroom but I also have a night table fan as well which helps with white noise.  In fact we take the fans so seriously (and depend on the white noise so much) that I installed 12v outlets in the bedroom so I can run a 12v fan when boondocking so I don't have to keep the big inverter on overnight (which is a challenge with our older batteries).

We picked up our new Costco mattress thanks to Roger's recommendation.  They had a sample to sit on and it felt very similar to our Tempur.  One more reason to be exhited about bringing her outta her winter slumber!

Well if I was that concerned I would have just ordered another Tempur or gone to a bed store for $200-400 more.  Laying or "sitting"  on a bed for 5-10 minutes isn't the real 6-8 hours of sleep anyways
