Drinking Water Filter

Has anyone experienced this?  I replaced the old filter in March and in April noticed that the shelf under the sink and filter was damp.  As we were about ready to leave on a trip, I put a small bowl under the filter.  It leaked about a 1/4 cup per day.  Later when I had time, I removed the new  filter and found that it was wet and had a clear but opaque gel on it.  The water coming out of the filter seemed okay and we drank it.  I put the diverter plug in the filter holder and it is not leaking.  I think the new filter has a leak around the top where the case is crimped to the white plastic, but could be an o-ring although they look okay.  No doubt I have a defective filter and will get it replaced after our trip.    I did not have antifreeze in the water system during the winter.  I use air to blow the water out of the lines.  Any ideas about what the gel is and where it came from?

Jerry, I suspect that that GEL is probably just calcium deposits that are constantly wet from leaking O Rings.  If not leaking with plug in place I would just replace filter and recheck.
BTW I would also try to find OEM filters , Believe brand is ADM or similar.

I had a similar leak that went away with the installation of a new filter.

Everpure filters are known to sometimes drip.  Don't know if it is an issue with the inside of the housing or different types of housing.  We change our Everpure filter about every 6 months and found that we have to put a wind of Teflon tape around the O rings.  We also put additional plumbers silicone grease on the O rings.  We have the type of housing that does not have the big rotating ring.  Filter just pushes up and the filter rotates.  We use a large channel lock to loosen and remove.
Because we don' t like water leaks, we have the cut off bottom of a plastic bottle under the filter and have a Harbor Freight water alarm inside the bottle, to notify us of drips.  Nice to know if it drips and nice to know that for sure it does not drip.

This was a brand new filter 45 days ago and only used a few times although there was water pressure most of the time.  Although the label on filter says Everpure and Pentair, it also has ADC in several places.  I suspect that Pentair/Everpure/ADC is now one company although I can not confirm that.  I did not blow air through it or have any problem installing it, same as the old one.  I will have to wait until I get home to see which online seller I bought it from.  Hard to believe the gel is calcium; now that it is dry it left behind some light colored grey green crystals.

Thanks Barry, I will try silicone grease and the cut off bottle.

Jerry, you are correct.  Pentair/Everpure/ADC are all the same.  Pentair is the Corporate name, and they own Shurflo & Everpure products.

I decided to clean the filter and reinstall.  I didn't have any silicone grease, so I used Vaseline on the outside o-ring.  The  small inside o-ring just keeps the filtered and unfiltered water separate.  For 24 hours there was no water in the container under the filter and I thought the leak was stopped, but after 36 hours, water in the container.  It's a slow leak; in a day or so I will remove it to see if the gel is back.

Agree with Gary, probably calcium. Put the gel into a plastic bottle top and add some vinegar. Gel should disappear in a few hours if calcium. You could also use 30% hydrogen peroxide in another cap to see if it foams from organic matter.

Our home shower head gets this stuff all the time from our well. I just soak the head in vinegar and we're back in business. When the flow gets too low, the tankless water heater won't come on.

Use plumbers grease on water and filter fittings, will not taste and will not harm O'Rings.  Petroleum based stuff will help deteriorate o'rings.

After I got home, I sent DiscountFilterStore.com  an email about my leaking filter.  They sent me a replacement.  I have not been able to leave the pump on continuously, but I usually have some pressure the next time it is turned on.  No leaks detected after more than a week, but I'm keeping a plastic cup under it.  The new one had grease (silicone?) on the O-rings.
