Clean Windshield With Steel Wool

I happened to see this video a few weeks ago, maybe it was from someone on this forum, but I could not find it with a Forum search.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D05vX-G9iV4  You will probably get an ad with the video.  I tried it and I like the results.  Then I was wondering if OOOO steel wool would work on the glass in the shower which we have never been able to get clean.  It worked on that too.  Took off the layer of soap scum rather easily.  I also found the the outside of the shower glass had a splatter of spots, from what I do not know that did not want to come off with windex or mineral spirits.  The steel wool will take it off with a lot of rubbing.  I'm still working on it, but it's looking almost like new.  Just be sure to vacuum up all the little bits of steel wool to avoid future rust spots, and best to have the shower completely dry.

Funny this should come up now as I had just finished cleaning my car, U295 and Geoffs GV windows using a 4" brand new scraper blade (very sharp) I used it to actually  "cut" the film of crud off the glass and it did a greast job in just a few minutes. I have not done the Rainx part but the difference is amazing and it feels very smooth too. It will not scratch the glass if you keep the blade about a 45 degree angle.

John, for what it is worth, I tried Rain-X and didn't care for how quickly it deteriorated in efficiency so I switched to Turtle Wax Ice.
It even shines up the rubber seals around the windshield. Only thing I did notice was the Turtle Wax Ice does need to be thoroughly rubbed a second time after an hour or so, but it does last a whole lot longer than Rain-X. Once it is on I didn't even have to use our windshield wipers, and you know how crappy those old wiper arms are when it comes to doing their job--even with new blades.
I even do the inside of the windshield, the appliances, the countertops, the stainless steel, the mirrors, and even the sink, shower walls, and the toilet with Ice.
I use it here in the house because the city water did leave spots on the shower walls until I used Ice.

I really like this stuff: http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/both+glass+polishes.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=

I use a lot of griot's products.  The best is this: http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/portable+water+deionizer.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search

Leaves a spot free finish without drying.  Extra nice on motorcycles that have hard to reach places.  David

Weird,  I haven't thought of it for years but I keep 0000 steel wool in the garage just for things like cleaning WS's and other glass, will also work on aluminum and other surfaces.  With a little mineral spirits its great for removing overspray.

I need a heavy pair of rubber gloves on when using steel wool, the fine steel tailings get driven into my fingertips and feel like needles in there within a short time.

Rick, I thought that that was just part of life, picking little bits of steel wool and other junk out of your fingers.  Maybe Ill learn to wear gloves someday.  :)

I detest gloves as they take away the "feel" you need when doing things. Those Nitride thin throwaway ones are the same for me too.

I learned the hard way, once was enough. 7 Mil nitrile gloves from Harbor Freight work well for any of the metal wools. 5 Mil for oil changes, wheel bearing/brake work, chassis lube, and waxing. I go through a lot of them.

A two quart hand pump pressure sprayer like pictured below filled with vinegar, water and a little liquid kitchen detergent will do wonders for cleaning showers or the outside where hard water has spotted the paint/glass/stainless bumpers. Does away with most of the hand work.

Maybe a category named  HINTS FROM ( take your pick ) is in order.  We all know about wood doctor, and vinegar for the shower head, now steel wool for WS's, could go one and one. :)

Use 0000 Steel Wool and water to remove hard water deposits from the Mirrored Windows, works really great, they look  new.
