D2 Governor for 1989 (split from another topic)

The compressor on the Detroit is not  pumping up the air... so...  I am assuming its the relay off to the side of the compressor that's not kicking in..  its stuck open an just letting the air bypass..  with the Detroit running, I tried tapping on the side of the relay with a hammer.  but couldn't get it to kick in.  Couldn't see any numbers on it, so I snapped a picture and took a hard look at it..  I'll hit the Detroit dealer tomorrow to by a replacement.. it shouldn't be that expensive of a part..  I suppose I could have taken a line off and shot some PC blaster up in it ... the spring is probably corroded.. I'm southern engineering everything anyway jut to get it home.

Mark,

Did the "relay" you are talking about look like this

If this is what you are talking about just ask for a D2 governor. Most any good parts store have them. They are very reasonable ~$25-30, this is one thing that you need to carry as a spare. Don't even worry about trying to repair it as they are too important to make your air system work properly. (think brakes, no air and your brakes are locked down)  Make sure that you use the proper ports and plug the ones you don't need.

Are you talking about the " D2" regulator that tells the compressor to cut in and out.  This is a low cost part if that is what you are taking about.  Take it off, mark all lines.  Take it to any truck parts store even NAPA and they can match it up.  After setting so long I would not be surprised if its frozen up.

Gary, and mike, do you happen to know what signals that a D2 givernor is going out?

I was going to buy a spare to carry as we have duscussed in prior threads and then techs at RV told me it not necessary, i would know when it going out.

I kinda shrugged, thanked them, but been nagging at me....how to know it is going out, need to replace?  I don't want to find out with total failure and be stuck at some store or Pilot

Thanks for your thoughts on this,

Mike

Mike, You may have no warning that the D2 Governor has failed until you can't get up any air.  They are a simple valve and I THINK that corrosion is what kills them but there is no way that I know of preventing that.  I guess that you could routinely remove the valve and clean it but I would not guarantee that that would prolong its life.

Michael:  I always carry a spare but have never had to use.  Seems you can gets these anywhere at all truck stops etc. but probably not available in the middle of some stretch of roads or middle of the dessert.  DAN

D2 Governor

Just called NAPA..  they have one in stock...

He said it's by TWD, and the cost is 16.99 and here I thought this was just a big truck store part..  :)

My NAPA store is a mile away.... Freightliner, a distributor for Detroit,  is 6 miles from me.

Freightliners cost is 44.69,    I asked and he answered, all D2 Governors are the same..

I need an oil filter for my Detroit motor too.. but stated he couldn't look it up without
a motor number..  he said the numbers should start with an 06  ...  Anyone happen to know the motor number off my 1989 Detroit diesel?

Thanks Guys

Clean the air valve.. typical of them to crud up. In decades of running coast to coast I have never had to buy one.
When you get home, service your air drier (looks like a piggy back [oil filter] assembly, near the V6.)  pc

The price difference on D2 governors could be overhauled or new.

I paid the higher price at freightliners..  it ended up being 41. bucks,  it's new and I assume it's US made.. by Bendix.. assembled in Mexico..

The other off brand sold by NAPA for 16.99 was Chinese...  no thanks, they could have gotten the bendix for about the same price, special order..  Freightliner had 122 in stock  :)

Freightliner was interesting..  it's open 24 hours a day for parts and service.. they have a movie theater inside, free soda, ice machine, and popcorn ... and a very pretty concierge girl walking around helping people  ;D

"Freightliner was interesting..  it's open 24 hours a day for parts and service.. they have a movie theater inside, free soda, ice machine, and popcorn ... and a very pretty concierge girl walking around helping people" The two big truck places I've visited have both had drivers' lounges with various amenities. Neither one was technically open 24 hours, but there was someone there 24 hours. Those places are there to keep the OTR rigs on the road, so they cater to the drivers. Especially in a larger city, there may be more than one such place to choose from.
