How to repair a leaking sink faucet?

My 1997 U-320 developed a water leak in the kitchen faucet.  Don't know whether or not it makes a difference, but this faucet has the single lever, in which I move the lever left or right for hot or cold water.  Anyway. the lever leaks, and I'm not sure how fix it without tearing up a lot of stuff.  I hope there is a better way.

I went to remove the faucet assembly, and see that first I'll need to remove the sliding bottom drawer. No problem.  However, there is still a fixed shelf just below the sink that will have to be removed to allow access to the bottom of the faucet.  I can't see any way to remove this shelf without destroying it.  I must be missing something, for I don't believe that Foretravel would have built it that way.

How can I repair my water leak without tearing up my sink shelf?

Glen,

Turn off water, depressurize, remove the cartridge from the faucet (from the top).  Go to a box store and buy a replacement.

No need to remove the whole faucet in 90% of the cases.

Glen,

I do not know what brand you have, but I am very familiar with Moen faucets. They come with a lifetime guarantee, and I have received several replacement parts from Moen over the years. In their design, the cartridge and various other parts are replaced from the top of the faucet. It is really quite easy (although I have had some practice doing it).

Regarding the shelf: If it is like mine, there are two wood strips that screw into the sidewalls. The shelf screws into them from the top. Mine had carpet on the bottom of the cabinet and the shelf; the screws are under that. But if you just want to remove it, you can probably just remove the 2 or 3 screws on each wood strip and leave them attached to the shelf.

It should be a Delta faucet. Home Depot has the rebuild kits and everything comes out the top. I did mine and it is very simple. But first, I would TIGHTEN the cap nut to see if the leak would stop with more pressure. If not, I see a trip to Home Depot in your future.

When we got our coach two years ago it was leaking.  I moved it to the top of our repair/upgrade list and replaced it.  ;D  I did not have a shelf to deal with though.

Both Delta and Moen send rebuild kits no-charge.  recently obtained all the parts and seals from Delta, after using their web site to identify my model faucet in FT. have done the same for Moen single lever at my residential kitchen sink.

Morgan, we have had similar experience with faucet manufacturers. Recently American Standard sent us an entire replacement kitchen faucet saying it would be easier for us than replacing the cartridge. It never hurts to call and ask.

Well, once again thanks for all the help.  I warned you in a recent post about my Aquahot heating system that I would have several dumb questions.  Sure enough. I shut off the water and removed the handle, and was able to pull out a ball valve.  I couldn't find the exact replacement at my Big Box store, and the guy in plumbing supplies couldn't guarantee that their "equivalent" would work.  I played it safe and called Delta, after going through their website to try to identify my faucet.  I'm pretty sure I narrowed it down to the correct model number, and Delta is sending out a new repair kit free of charge. 

This ought to be much easier than pulling the entire faucet and replacing washers and seals.  Who knew that plumbing repair was so advanced!!??  Man, with all the advancements in technology these days, perhaps someday they may even invent something to replace my 8-track car stereo.  Someday we might even see some real futuristic stuff like portable phones with cameras even!

No need to pull the faucet. Underneath the ball valve you will see 2 cup seals that have little springs under them. These are what usually leak. Just stick a small screwdriver in there and they will pop out. The kit will contain these seals and springs. I replaced ALL of the seals while I had it apart.
