step cover not working

After visiting MOT who worked air leaks among other issues, we discovered the step cover would no longer slide closed when we were, of course, miles down the road. Their solution was for me to crawl under the front and assure that both the step and cover valve regulators were set to 60. When that didn't work, their last ditch effort so we could leave on a month long trip was to set the cover regulator to 0 psi so it could be manually opened and closed. What a pain! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps your air regulator stopped allowing air to move through.  Pick one up just about any where but napa has a quality one.
Ck to insure air lines are open.  I lost the step cover air regulator but air was leaking out the top. Crawl under the step area and you will see two air regulators.  This should be a simple fix.  Be careful if you have a lot of air pressure in the line. Allow to bleed down or it will pop off loudly.  If not the air regulator I am not sure what to do sorry.

Thanks Dan.  I'm getting ready to go out and crawl under the front end before the oven really gets going here in N TX.  I didn't realize that I could purchase that little regulator from NAPA. Here's hoping the problem isn't an obsolete part like the valve that's attached to the regulator.  The replacement, of course, isn't the same size as the one in my 1999 U295 which would require new holes drilled etc.  Always an adventure, right?

You need to check your shuttle valve/ Norgen valve that transfers an electrical signal to an air movement. It has a coil on top of it with wires  coming out. Take a Volt meter and check the connector to see if you are getting a signal when you push the button. Check the resistance on the coil to see if it is burned up.  If all this checks good then you may have to remove the valve and take it apart and clean the crud out of the little piston.  Now you are looking for a little square box mounted to the back of the step cover. Not only does it have wires coming out of it, it has several air lines connected to it.

Here is what you are looking for, one is the old version and the other is the new version they do the same thing. One operates the step cover and the other operates the outside step. As a side note the black ones are a lot simpler to work on that the aluminum colored ones.

We just try to help out when we can. We don't have pics of the inside of one as the last time DH had one apart the camera operator wasn't on duty.

After FOT did some fixing on our step cover, operation was intermittent. After a few trips under the step, I found that one of the wires to the electromechanical switch/valve had not be properly dressed and seated in the switch. This is the "shuttle valve/Norgen valve" referenced in an earlier post. My recollection is that I was able to repair the faulty connection without removing the valve.
