Exhaust Pipe Wrapping

I removed some old heat insulation from the exhaust pipe that connects to the turbo outlet and runs to the muffler on my 8.3C.

I'm wondering.......is this insulation doing any good other than keeping heat out of the bedroom? If the underside of the bed support is insulated properly, do I even need to re-wrap this portion of the exhaust?

Manifold and turbo are not wrapped.

I would re wrap it,  will keep the heat down in the engine bay. just my thoughts. Iam not sure but the sooner you can get rid the exhaust heat the better your turbo will work. Iam sure someone with a better knowledge of turbos will have more information.

Turbo blankets and pipe wraps are inexpensive on ebay. Safety wire the turbo pipe so it can't come loose before wrapping.

Turbo blankets come in different sizes. Do research before ordering. Detroits take the x-large T6 size.

Thanks Pierce. I'm determined not to wrap the turbo. It came from the factory without it and all the trucks I drove with Cummins did not have turbo wraps. Hate to add something that may cause problems in the future. I am only interested in the exhaust pipe to the muffler. Who has it and who doesn't. And possible why.

@Twig mine's a Detroit so take it for what it's worth but my exhaust is wrapped from the manifold to the turbo to the muffler. Pretty sure from the factory that way.

Ken,

I have seen several Foretravels with the blanket on the turbo and the pipes wrapped. They look OEM but may have been optional. The blanket and wrapping provide extra insurance against a possible spray of diesel onto the turbo/pipes and also will reduce the engine compartment heat. The DDEC II ECU on the Detroit is bolted to the engine 3 or 4 inches from the turbo. It is cooled by diesel fuel running through it but the wires/connectors are exposed to radiant heat from the turbo so nice to protect them.

The aftermarket $38 blanket variety probably provide as good protection as the $100 nifty looking ones. Prices vary on the wrap depending on the material.

I wrapped the turbo and the exhaust pipe from turbo to muffler with kit from online.  This was the third or fourth thing I did to our U270/8.3.  Never noticed any power increase.  Did notice appreciably less heat in engine compartment and bedroom.
