Replacement Toilet

Got a Sea/Land Traveler that the DW says needs to be replaced. Don't know why, go figure. Anyway, she thinks we need a taller one and that brings up a problem of what to do with the door behind it. Do I cut it off and re-anchor the cur-off piece like a deep front or put some kind of decorative material that will move out of the way when opened. We use the bottom of that cabinet for toilet paper so reaching in and down six or eight inches would be no real problem. Thanks for any input.

I have the same issue with my 91 I bought s new Thetford style plus toilet low profile model and it is 3/4 inch too tall so cabinet door will not open. I have not installed it yet. We like it but its going to sit untill I  figure how to make everything work.

We really like that cupboard behind the toilet. That is where the hamper for clothes that need washing goes along with TP, and some other stuff. I'd hate to be without it and can't figure out an easy way to accommodate a taller toilet while keeping the cupboard the same. If anyone has a clue to a toilet that fits let me know. Otherwise I'm going to have to rebuild the toilet....

I am in the same boat since I installed a new Dometic 320. Right now, I just have the hole where the door was. In my case, the very back inch or so of the toilet  raises up enough to be in the way.

I am still mulling over several design ideas. Maybe all of US can brainstorm and come up with a "best design" concept.

Options off the top of my head:

    1. Use my dremel and cutoff that porcelain that sticks up. Would probably have to epoxy the area to make sure I did not lose some strength. It *appears* to be primarily a design thingy or maybe a handle, not needed after it is installed.

    2. Reinstall the cabinet door after notching out enough to clear the back of the toilet.

    3. Change the hinge to a piano hinge and raise the door up enough to clear the toilet.

    4. Velcro the door in place (probably adding a knob to make it easier to remove.

Anybody else?

I think that's what we put in last week. At any rate it is a Thedford china base and an inch or so taller than the old one. The cabinet door opens nicely. A new gasket would have been cheaper, but about the same labor cost, so we elected to get a whole new toilet. We were quoted an hour of labor. The actual job took a little longer, but they stuck with the hour labor.

That is my question. It is $247 for a brand new Sea/Land Traveler from PPL and a repair kit is $177. And I would guess that the labor for installing a new toilet will be less that replacing seal, ball and fill valve. Am I wrong that the repairing of the old will cost more then buying a  new toilet and installing it.

If your toilet is not over the holding tank, short style and mounted on top of a pedestal, you may find the new short ceramic bowl height slightly taller than your existing bowl.  If this is the case and you don't like the new taller toilet you can use every part off the new toilet and still use the original ceramic part if you want.  So buy the new full toilet and check it out, that is what we did.  We think the spray hose is a reqirement.

They are cheaper at Amazon. With free shipping. The one we have is plastic and doesn't hold water at all. Plus you have to go through an elaborate routine of lining the plastic bowl with toilet paper to make sure no "material" touches the plastic; if it touches it sticks. Our toilet is over the holding tank and on a pedestal base so height is critical. I'll have to measure the pedestal to the bottom of the door in order to see if we can use a new "short" ceramic model.

It can't be taller than 14" from the base to the top... or actually needs to be a little less... for the door to clear.

Remove the hinges, glue magnets on the back of the door & put a metal lip inside the cabinet (on two sides), and a knob or handles on the door . Simple to pull toward you a bit & then lift out. Simple to put back. Nothing on the exterior to show changes.

Another thing to consider.when I took out the Galaxy toilet the mounting flange bolts are at 11  and 5 o clock positions.the mount is glued in and screwed down.the replacement toilet bolts down at 9 and  3 o clock position.Whoever installed the base flange originally did not glue it in with the bolt slots in the 9 and 3 o clock position like it should have been.so ill have to cut 2 new slots in the flange for the mount bolts and a couple new holes for the existing screws.

I just rebuilt my Sealand, Traveler with new siphon breaker valve with seal, water valve, bowl seals, and the white swivel ball valve, for a total of 4 bags #'s of parts.  I think that my total from Adventure RV was a little over $120.  My time on my knees and doing a full clean up was less than 2 hours of time.  Setting a new unit would sure have been easier.

Dave I rebuilt this Galaxie also but the foot pedal bushings are shot and the water valve hangs up.the bowl is also stained and we decided a porcelain bowl would be was easier to clean . I am going to shorten the storage cabinet door to clear and I have a idea how to make it all look like its supposed too . I'm going to run it by my buddy that builds beautiful furniture. Hint Hint, Hey Deano, How do you think we can raise this door opening to clear this new toilet!!lol call in my posse!!! ^.^d

Check out the Thetford link above.  The low profile is 14" and at least worked in the 1993 U240.

Cut door in half, hinge in center and at top. Think vertical bifold door.

Dave's mention of purchases from Adventure RV reminds me of the bad reputation that Adventure RV and its owner Leonard J Socinski have.  They are located in Sevierville, TN, (a few miles from the old Foretravel owned showroom).

We have purchased items from them and received the wrong item, and a used item sold as new.  They don't seem to have a warehouse location or anyplace to call.  It took months and dozens of emails to get it resolved.  After our purchase, I Googled and found more about their bad service and knew we were not alone and should not have bought anything from them.  Some have been stuck with wrong major appliances.
