EGR replacement.

My EGR tube is causing my check engine light to come on due to it being very dirty. Time to replace it or can I do away with it? Is there a way to convince the computer it's not there or should I just get the replacement part? Anybody have an idea that I haven't suggested ? Theses tubes are hard to come by. I may have to take mine off and send it in to have it refurbished. Thanks for any suggestions! Paul Hale , This is for an ISM Cummings 500 hp on an 07 Nimbus

No legal way to eliminate anything environmental. You may find a shop that will defeat the EGR for "off road use" but the penalty if caught is pretty severe.
I assume the tube you referenced are the exhaust cooler tubes. My EGR valve started throwing fail to position codes last year on the way to Alaska, engine ran fine and is acually good for the engine if the EGR valve stays closed. I didn't see any improvement in mileage or performance, my 03 ISM 500 mileage stinks. Everyone I've spoken with, that has this engine, has the same complants.

Early this year I replaced the EGR valve, $1000 for a Cummins Reman. I removed the cover on the old one and the gears were stripped (brass) causing the valve to only open about 5%. My coach has around 155k miles and the EGR valve had been replaced at least 2  maybe 3 times before I got the coach. The coach had 92k when we bought it.

When I replaced the EGR the cooler tubes were clear and in good shape. I was happy that I didn't have to deal with the cooler. This EGR system is costing us 2 or more miles per gallon when compared to an older non EGR M11.

I started having trouble on my way back from Alaska  this year. I do know that it's wrong to remove said environmental control devices, merely wishful thinking on my part. My gas mileage and performance has really suffered since this has started. I hope to have this problem taken care of next week and back on the road soon . I'm replacing my cooler tubes and valve , thanks for the support , it's nice to know you are not alone with this type of issue.
After reading about EGR elimination , I will not take a chance to by pass. I will replace and live with my choices. Thanks to all for all the great advice!!

What mileage are you 03 500 ISM owners considering poor?

When the check engine light came on and off starting in Alaska on the way home, I went from 7.5 to 4 with a significant loss of power. Hills that should be of no concern became major obstacles. It was not a fun trip home, it took a lot of for thought to plan the flatest way home . We made it ok. Some unhappy people behind us thought our coach should do a lot better!

Not fun.  My m11 shows 7.5 mpg for the last 100k miles
