Windshield Recommendations

Anyone have any recommendations for windshield near Sarasota, Florida?

If it's going to be an insurance job, contact your insurance carrier--- they will almost certainly get in touch with Guardian glass who will recommend a glass shop in your area to do the work.  That is what State Farm did here in Texas.  I then told them I wanted Foretravel to replace the glass and they went along with that.

Hmm, okay, I figured it was probably pretty simple, but I thought I remembered someone driving to the factory for glass for some reason.  Thank you.

If you search the forum you will find examples of non-matching glass, glass popping out, and gaskets not sealing.  I've had no problems at FT, and also at Safelite-authorized installers using Gardian glass.

Just had my drivers side windshield replaced at Foretravel on Friday Oct, 16.  I went to parts to get a price for the windshield which was $700 and then asked what the labor charge would be to replace it.  After meeting with the service coordinator he said it would take about 3.5 hours and gave me 30 minutes to decide if I wanted it done.  My final bill was about $1000 after my discount.  They did a great job and I guess I really lucked out because an appointment is usually required.

Good luck with your repair

From our research, there are 3 brands of windshields - Guardian, CoachGlass, and Viracon*.  We had the ability to compare a left and right CoachGlass to a left and right Guardian, and we could find no difference in the dimensions.  Coloring and shading, yes.

Issues regarding popped out windshields have a lot of varying factors, including the hole in which the windshield sits, gasket size, the way in which the windshield was installed, etc.  However, we found that when compared side by side, the size and curvature of the Guardian to CoachGlass was remarkably the same.

If I was replacing only one side, I would definitely want to make sure I match the tint of the other remaining windshield.

*I know nothing about Viracon glass.

The windshield was a guardian made for Foretravel. The sticker says Foretravel stamped in the glass.

I'm told we may have Safelite Autoglass coming here to Bandelier NM to replace a GSA pickup truck's windshield and I was gonna ask them about replacing both of the windshields on my coach... Yeah, I broke the other one while driving up here to Bandelier immediately after being released from the ordeal with the fuel injector and U joint at Hal Burns in Santa Fe... and I probably used some language I'm not proud of, but I managed to maintain pretty good control of my attitude considering the situation :) ...So has anyone on this forum had Safelite install windshields in their coach at a campsite? I don't wanna drive it to their place because I'm afraid I'll be stranded there if they botch the job... Sure hope that doesn't count as a bad attitude? ...Any advice pertaining to Safelite would be appreciated. I've used them several times for automobile windshields but this will be my first coach windshield(s). I have Progressive insurance with glass coverage, but I'm sure I'll have to pay two separate deductibles because each windshield was broken by a separate rock and they're separate reports... Sorry to hijack your thread but we're going the same way and I thought it would be good for the environment to recycle. ;)

From what I heard, the slant nose windshields are very special to replace....Xtreme won't even do them.

When we needed the windshield replaced in our '93 U225, I insisted that they insurance company get glass FROM Foretravel, as I had learned that others had experienced problems with similar glass coming out of Elkhart or wherever.  I told the insurance rep that they could check with the Factory to confirm, and do the job once ... or they could do it their way and then have to deal with the same issue in a a few months when the glass cracked and I was all over them for not listening to me in the first place.  She got back to me after doing her own due diligence and the Glass was shipped from Foretravel to an installer.  That being said ... we have had windshields replaced on our flat front '95 U320 and our '02 U320 ... but they were at Tennessee RV and at FOT.  They made sure that the tinted areas were the same.  I DID happen to walk past the section of glass before it was installed at FOT, and ran my finger around the edge just for fun.  I found a small chip near the curve and brought it to the attention of the Service Manager because I objected to having that piece installed.  They switched it out for a different one with no argument.

I find it easier to avoid their senseless baiting by just adding ALL "one track minds" to my "Ignore" list (that Steve has so kindly provided us in the Foreforums site design) -- (Account/Modify Profile/Buddies/Ignore List/Edit Ignore List/"Enter Member's Handle".  Then I intentionally avoid going back to look at what sort of "unrest drivel" they are peddling.

Again, slant nose windshields are a huge pain, from what I hear.

When I had to replace both sides in my 95 U280 Duncan Glass was the adjuster, they had glass sent from somewhere other then FT and when installer looked at it in crate he said no.  Then Duncan ordered Guardian from FT and it was installed with no problem.  I am not sure of the legalities but it seems that only Guardian can supply OEM WS;s for FT's.

My 320 has a coach glass drivers side and a viracon on the passenger I think is original.

Cracked the passenger side and replacing both so we start over with new glass on both sides.

Got a new W/S in NAC after front blow out two months ago. I bought it from for travel and it was put in at Xtreme. It actually has the FT logo and name on the glass. First time I've seen that. Windshield on this coach over the years they were all bought through for travel.

Progressive uses Duncan as their glass adjuster and I was told they install Guardian glass, which is what my coach has in it currently. Both windshields are badly frosted around the edges so it will be nice to replace them just from a cosmetic standpoint. Both of them are cracked now from rocks. I think the gasket probably needs to be replaced too because some small pieces of rubber have come off the gasket over the years. It doesn't leak though. The cracks don't obstruct my view so I can still drive safely. I'm registered in TN so I don't have to pass inspection. If Safelite looks at it and is sure they can do the glass replacement here in the campground I'll let them do it. If not I'll wait until I get back to Foretravel and let them do it... unless the windshield becomes unsafe before I get there... I get a lot of rocks unfortunately... :(

Scott, Invest the hundred bucks or so at FOT and replace the gasket.  The installer will be happier and your labor bill will be lower.  Replacing a stiff gasket ( if it will come out in one piece ) only makes the installers work more difficult and as it continues to harden you may have to replace it anyway.

Yes, this is an ideal time to replace the gasket because both windshields will be removed anyway.
