Budget Dash Camera Review

I wrote my review 6 months ago.  Our camera has worked great since then  - I forget it is there.  Only problem, since it does not have a internal battery, it tends to lose it's date/time setting if not used every few days.  I currently have it connected to a "ignition key on" 12-volt power source, so it comes on automatically when I start the engine.  I might try hooking it up to a "always hot" power source, so it would be on all the time.  I don't think it would hurt anything - the power consumption is minuscule.  It stores about 6 hours of data before it begins "over-writing" the old stuff, so it would still serve the intended function (anti-litigation protection ).

OR, you could just buy a camera with a built-in battery.

We purchased a KDLinks dash cam for general use. It records in 1080P for hours using a replaceable micro SD card of up to 128gb. We also purchased a battery so we could use it away from a vehicle. This model was chosen because it had the longest cord of the top rated models. It has build in GPS so it can be used with a Google Map app that shows the video in one screen and your location at that time in another window. Video is in .MOV format so easy to view and edit. The free app VLC is excellent to view almost any video format or even play almost any music format. This model has an internal battery but just to store time and settings. Dave Katsuki purchased another brand and if I remember correctly, has been very happy with it. See the model we purchased at the Amazon website: Amazon.com : KDLINKS® X1 Full-HD 1920*1080 165° Wide Angle Car Dashboard...

We use a Garmin 20. I've been pleased. It includes GPS, so it tracks time, location, and speed. It records those data with the movie. It has accelerometers. In case of an "incident" that exceeds the threshold of shock settings, it will mark a period of time as protected so it won't be overwritten during automatic recycling of the MicroSD storage.

The only problem I've experienced is that is got stuck a couple of times. I did a full format of the SD card in use during the glitches, and experienced no more problems.

We've kept a bit of footage of wildlife on the road. Fortunately, we've not had to keep footage for any "road incidents."

We got a Lukas dash cam
Amazon.com: Lukas LK-7200 CUTY 1080p Full HD Car Dashboard Camera and Video...
and it's been totally trouble free.  Wired it into ignition and connected its video output to the alternate rear cam monitor input so I can see what it's seeing for setup (actually only need that when setting up).  Trouble free.  I occasionally look at the files (have to remove the card and play on a laptop) if we've been somewhere interesting, but otherwise don't check it.

Bumping this older thread to report we bought this dash cam and it is fantastic!  Steve built a little wedge that Duo-locks to our windshield for the proper recording angle (and holds the GPS puck).  We also bought the hard wire bits, but we're using the cigarette lighter plug for the current coach so we can move it to the toad for the summer.

Great reviews on iRV2 and dashcamtalk.com

The first video it captured was great, and watching it sped up is hilarious - the Benny Hill theme song played in my head while watching it.

We have a Vacron dash cam.  32 GB in six hours. Lots of fun to share where we have been with friends and to captured frames when we just can't take a picture.  We really like ours.

For several years we have had drive cameras in both Jeep & motorhome to support accidents and Law Enforcement false accusations.  Jeep's camera records front and rear view.  We see many drive camera models, with some good looking ones under $100.  A lot of competition in this area.
