Listen to Your Aqua Hot

Rudy taught me how to observe the AH exhaust both on starting and turning it off.  It would give me some ideas on the health of the system.  In my semi-routine to do that, I noticed last week that when it shut off on diesel, it "sort of" kept running.  The noise from the unit was less, not seeming to burn diesel, but it would try to shutoff the exhaust only to start running harder, then slow and then get louder.  As though it was struggling or undecided if to shut off.

Went by and saw Mike Rodgers last week, knew they were terribly busy.  Did I need to stay on electricity until later?  He said he was sure it was a diode in a wire to the stirrer in the AH, I must not run the AH on diesel until that replace that or risk ruining the electronic controls and that would be expensive.  About a coach buck whereas this diode thing is minor.

James Johnson or Keith Risch checked into it this week, took less than an hour to fix.  Glad to save that electronics part.  And I reaffirmed it is important to listen to things, be observant.  Perhaps it will help you to know of this episode.

Maybe Rudy will chime in on how this diode works, its role (hope he does not say that I had it all wrong!).

MIke,

On the older version of the Aqua Hot Heater (AHE 100 02S and older), the ones with no electronic control board, the number two pump is run by the burner anytime the blower is running.  This is done by a red Diode wire from the black burner motor wire on the "C"plug to the number two relay pump power connection.

This connection is energized when the the number two replay is latched by the bathroom thermostat calling for heat.  The energized red wire would back feed threw the "C" plug to the Control Unit causing it to fail.  The diode prevents this failure.

Good catch or is that good ears for an older fella.  Hope this helps.
